ITALY'S PEAKS

Italy's mountains cover a third of the country and offer tourists many different landscapes: incredible forests, lakes and enchanting villages rich in history and traditions

The two most important Italian chains of mountains are - The Alps - The Appennines

Piedmont
there are: - many winter sports complexes - Sestriere - Souze d'Oulx

ABRUZZO

The Gran Sasso National Park:

is in Abruzzo and is home to the Calderone Glacier, the only glacier in the Appennines

Roccaraso:

the most well-equipped ski resort in Abruzzo with more than 160 kilometres of pistes

Aosta Valley
there are: - the traditional village of Courmayeur famous for the scenery and nightlife - Cervinia at the base of Monte Cervino, best know for the Matterhorn mountain and its ski slopes

The Appennines

Cover the whole peninsula and are divided into sections

  1. northern
  2. central
  3. southern

They extend from Liguria ( in the northwest) to Sicily ( in the south) for a total lenght of 1.400 kilometres

TUSCANY

Abetone:

is one of the most important resorts in the Appennines, bery popular both in winter for skiing and in summer for its nature.

The Dolomites
there are:- exclusive resort of Cortina D'Ampezzo and Val Gardena -500 km of hiking and mountain biking trails -vie ferrate

The Italian Alps

They spread from west to east through 6 regions:

  1. The Aosta Valley
  2. Piedmont
  3. Lombardy
  4. Veneto
  5. Trentino-Alto Adige
  6. Friuli-Venezia Giulia
The Gran Paradiso National Park
shared between the Aosta Valley and Piedmont

SICILY

Etna

is an active volcano in Sicily and is one of the most important mountains in Italy

The Pollino National Park

The Pollino National Park covers the regions of Basilicata and Calabria and is the largest protected area in Italy with 192,000 hectares

The Sila National Park

is a national park in Calabria that expands over parts of the Provinces of Cosenza, Crotone and Catanzaro

PUGLIA

is a small town located in the Gargano National Park, it is famous main fort its history and church.
