- Ladrón de bicicletas ganó el Premio Honorífico de la Academia en 1950 y es considerado una de las películas más importantes de la historia del cine. Su influencia se ha extendido a cineastas de todo el mundo y sigue siendo un poderoso retrato de la lucha humana por la supervivencia y la dignidad en tiempos de adversidad.
Impacto y legado
La realidad de la posguerra: Las calles de Roma, en su autenticidad, juegan un papel central, presentando a una ciudad en ruinas que refleja la devastación económica y social de la posguerra.
El vínculo padre-hijo: La relación entre Antonio y Bruno se ve afectada por el contexto de necesidad, donde la desesperación del padre lo lleva a tomar decisiones difíciles, afectando profundamente a su hijo. Este vínculo emocional es uno de los pilares de la película.
Desesperanza y pobreza: La película refleja la situación de pobreza extrema de la clase trabajadora italiana después de la guerra. La bicicleta simboliza mucho más que un objeto; es la diferencia entre mantener la dignidad laboral y caer en la miseria.

De Sica optó por usar actores no profesionales, lo que realza el realismo de las actuaciones. Estilo cinematográfico
La historia sigue a Antonio Ricci, un hombre desempleado en la Roma de posguerra, quien finalmente consigue trabajo pegando carteles, una tarea que depende de su bicicleta. Sin embargo, al poco tiempo de empezar, su bicicleta es robada. Para Antonio, la pérdida representa no solo la imposibilidad de seguir trabajando, sino un golpe directo a su dignidad y a su habilidad para sustentar a su familia. A lo largo de la película, se embarca en una búsqueda desesperada junto a su pequeño hijo Bruno, recorriendo las calles de Roma en un intento de recuperar su medio de subsistencia.
