INTERNATIONAL WOMEN'S DAY
On March 8, countries worldwide will celebrate International Women’s Day (IWD). The first IWD was organized by a political group, the Socialist party of America, in the United States in 1909. Every year since then, people observe March 8th as the day to revere the diverse accomplishments of women everywhere.
WHAT DO WE CELEBRATE ON MARCH 8TH?
International Women's Day started with a protest that took place in New York City in 1908. Fifteen thousand women went out onto the streets to demand equal rights and better working conditions. In particular, they wanted shorter working hours, better pay and the right to vote.
Why do we celebrate Women's day on March 8th?
Gender Equality
Women and girls represent half of the world’s population and therefore also half of its potential. But gender inequality persists everywhere. Here are many examples of women and girls having a lower position in society than men and boys.and stagnates social progress. Did you know that, around the world:• On average, women in the labor market still earn 23 percent less than men globally and women spend about three times as many hours in unpaid domestic and care work as men.
Saoirse Ronan in ‘Little Women’
Women, they have minds, and they have souls, as well as just hearts. And they've got ambition, and they've got talent, as well as just beauty. I'm so sick of people saying that love is just all a woman is fit for.
- Many more girls than boys are married while they are still children
- Child marriage often means stopping school, getting pregnant early, isolation and an increased risk of violence
• Nearly a quarter of teenage girls aged 15 to 19 are not in school, compared to only 13 per cent of boys. Less than half of the world’s countries offer girls and boys equal access to education
One in five teenage girls have experienced violence from their partner
All these areas of inequality have been exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic: there has been a surge in reports of sexual violence, women have taken on more care work due to school closures, and 70% of health and social workers globally are women.
Don't you think there are enough reasons to stand up and fight for women's rights?
Describe the problem you are going to solve and, above all, why your idea is interesting
