The invention
The invention of the telephone dates back to the 20th century, more precisely in 1834, when Antonio Meucci (Firenze – April 13, 1808) began working on it. Various prototypes were built and submitted to the American company Western Union Telegraph Company for funding. The company not only responded negatively but also reported the disappearance of the prototypes. However, in 1876 a former employee of the company who had examined Meucci's prototypes patented the telephone (Alexander Graham Bell – March 3, 1847 – Edinburgh). It was only in 2002 that the U.S. Congress recognized Meucci as the inventor of the telephone.
Causes and reasons:
To communicate with his wife, who was on the second floor of their cottage, Meucci utilized his discovery from Havana in 1849 and created a permanent telephone connection between the bedroom and the basement, and then from there to his outdoor laboratory.
What did people use before the telephone?
People used the Telegraph which is a long distance communication system designed for the transmission of data using certain codes.
however, before the telegraph, letters were sent using domesticated carrier pigeons.
How does it work?
In a telephone, a special microphone, contained in the lower part of the receiver, transforms the mechanical oscillations produced by the sound into variations of a magnetic field and, from this, into variations of electric current. The weak electric current is transmitted over great distances and along cables and at the other end, it is transformed again into sound, then emitted by a small speaker located in the upper part of the receiver. Given its complexity and cost, the telephone remained a privilege reserved for a few, and could only be used by users of the same urban line.
