The National Emblem of India is a replica of the Sarnath Lion. It depicts four lions standing back to back. The emblem symbolizes power, courage and confidence.

India is a very spiritual country. It has no official religion, but more than 80 percent of Indians are Hindu. About 13 percent are Muslim. Other religions include Buddhism, Sikhism, and Jainism.

Bollywood is the Indian film industry. The name was combined with two words: “Bombay” (= Mumbai) and "Hollywood".the most popular genre in Bollywood is "masala film" : A film that mixes action, comedy, romance, and drama with musical numbers (songs and dances). The costumes are often very colourful.

- India's earliest civilization is 5,000 years old- In the late 1400s, Europeans arrived in India for commerce. - In 1757, Britain gained control over country (= colonization)- In 1920, the famous Mahatma Gandhi began nonviolent protests to push the British out - In 1947, India won its independence.

Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi est un homme politique qui a permis à l’Inde de devenir un État indépendant en 1947. Surnommé le Mahatma, Gandhi est aussi très connu pour sa non-violence. Même si Gandhi est envoyé en prison plusieurs fois, lui et son mouvement politique vont réussir à faire plier les Britanniques. Ses principes de non-violence ont inspiré d’autres dirigeants, comme Martin Luther King, le leader de la lutte pour les droits des Noirs aux États-Unis.

Festivals: Holi and Diwali

  • Holi is a popular festival celebrated as the Festival of Colours. Holi also celebrates the arrival of Spring in India and Nepal, the end of winter, and the blossoming of love
  • Diwali is the festival of lights. It symbolises the "victory of light over darkness, good over evil, and knowledge over ignorance". Diwali is celebrated between mid-September and mid-November. The celebrations generally last five or six days.
