Instructions, similarities, and differences

Unit 11

Let's go!

Introduction

Using topics and variations on questions in IELTS bands 3-6, we will cover the vocabulary in Unit 11 as well as practice answering some scenarios using the information in this and previous lessons.

Start course

Modules

Instructions

Learn how to read, give, and understand instructions with and without external resources

Differences & Similarities

Understanding how to explain differences and similarities in a variety of contexts

Instructions - Summary

To begin, turn to page 105 in your textbooks. We will go through each one, with one student using the selected phrase in an example situation sentence. You cannot use the same scenario twice. Once the sentence has been given and written on the board, I want everyone to read out the sentence.

Visual Instructions Activity

In this activity, you will be in pairs, one person being Person A and the other being Person B. For the first example, Person B will close their eyes, and Person A will see the instructions they need to explain.

+ info

Person A's instructions

Person A will get a brief introduction to their instructions, and then I will play a short video so that visual examples of the instruction can be given.

Person B's instructions

Person A will get a brief introduction to their instructions, and then I will play a short video so that visual examples of the instruction can be given.

安装烟雾探测器

Installing a smoke detector

更换轮胎

Chaning a tire

Directions

Using the "Directions" vocabulary we learnt in Unit 3, someone will come to the front and give directions to one of the locations on the map (including the vocabulary for this lesson). The class must then correctly identify where the directions lead to.

Good Instructions

I'm going to show you a video of a game called "Exact Instructions". Then, in pairs, you will give your partner exact instructions to do something in class and they must follow it exactly as you say.

我要给你们看一个名为 “精确指令 ”的游戏视频。然后,你们两人一组,在课堂上给同伴准确的指令,让他们做某件事情,他们必须完全按照你说的去做。

Differences and Similarities - Summary

Like before, turn to page 106 in your textbooks. We will go through each one, with one student using the selected phrase in an example situation sentence. You cannot use the same scenario twice. Once the sentence has been given and written on the board, I want everyone to read out the sentence.

Preparation

Discussing similarities and differences is a big part of the IELTS. This could happen in Part One of the Speaking test but more likely in Part Three. The examiner will then expect you to make comparisons between the two things at length.

You may have to make comparisons between two objects, two places, periods of time or groups of people. Often students try to compare two things or two people and end up just making lists of differences. This will not get you a good score in the test.

It is also worth remembering that just because the examiner asks you to compare two things; it does not mean that you cannot talk about the similarities between the two things too. If you talk about both the similarities and the differences it will help you to speak longer in the test. Thus making it easier for yourself.

Bad example

This is an example of a bad comparison

Good example

This is an example of a good comparison

What are the main differences between your mother and father?

My father is tall but my mother is short. My father is fat but my mother is thin. My father wears glasses but my mother doesn’t wear glasses. My father has a job but my mother doesn’t have a job.

What are the main differences between your mother and father?

My father is a tall person. If ever we need someone to reach something high up in the house, we always ask my dad because it is easy for him to reach it. But my mum is pretty short. She can barely reach anything in the house if it is in a high place. So she always asks me or my dad to help her. We often laugh about this together.

Objectives

To practice discussing similarities and differences, we will put some ideas on the board, and write some similarities and differences for them. We will then, as a class, construct an answer.

下一张幻灯片是雅思考试比较部分常见的 3 个话题。请选择其中一个,并在 10 分钟内决定自己要说的内容并背诵下来。然后我们将在全班展示。

Objectives

On the next slide is 3 topics that are common for the comparative section of the IELTS test. Select one, and you have 10 minutes to decide what you are going to say and memorize it. We will then present them to the class.
