Domain 3

Can be used to start a new topic and evolve understanding. Activate prior knowledge by providing a list of key concepts and have learners map their connections. Throughout instruction, have learners revisit and revise their concept maps. Have them submit a picture of their final map before leaving class to help you identify misconceptions.

Concept Mapping

Use Quizizz, Kahoot, Gimkit, or Blooket periodically throughout the lesson! You can take the Quizizz sample lesson & can post it for your asynchronous learners

Gamify It

Quick formative assessment at the conclusion of the lesson. Needs to have specific prompts that take students no more than 5 minutes to complete.

Create a hashtag such as #whatiknowaboutcells. Have learners share a photo that depicts something they learned OR ask a question they have and share it in the chat with the hashtag.

Domain 3: How Formative Assessments Can Be Used As Evidence

3A Communicating With Students

  • Connect/Activate Prior Knowledge
  • Formative Assessment
  • Active Engagement
3B Using Questioning & Discussion Techniques
  • Formative Assessment
  • Active Engagement
3C Engaging Students in Learning
  • Instant Feedback
  • Knowledge Checks
3D Using Assessment in Instruction
  • Feedback
  • Formative Assessment
  • Knowledge Checks

Wonderful way to connect science literacy to help students develop critical thinking skills.Claim - Student makes a statement that addresses a question.Evidence - Student supports their claim with data or research.Reasoning - Student provides an explanation of how and why their evidence supports their claim. You already do this! But we can always try new discussion techniques - click on Genial.ly to the right for different ideas on how to capture students' understanding.
