SeaHawk Talk: OnCourse Book Club
The QEP book club uses On Course by Skip Downing as a foundation for discussions aimed at enhancing student success and personal responsibility. Participants explore practical strategies from the book to help students improve skills like time management, goal-setting, and self-discipline. Through collaborative discussions, the book club encourages faculty and staff to implement these strategies in their roles, fostering a supportive learning environment that aligns with the college’s Quality Enhancement Plan goals of student growth and academic achievement.

Now in its 9th edition, On Course is used each year by more than 100,000 students in student success courses, first-year experience programs, and inward-looking courses that promote student growth and self-awareness. Because of the unique journaling component, the text is also used in developmental, co-requisite support and credit-level composition courses. View impressive data from On Course programs.
On Course: Strategies for Creating Success in College, Career and Life (Wadsworth/Cengage) is the #1 student success/FYE text in North America, offering a hands-on approach for learning essential life and study skills.

SeaHawk Talk: Volunteering in the Community
Sleep in Heavenly Peace (SHP) is a national nonprofit organization dedicated to ensuring that no child sleeps on the floor. They organize community-driven events where volunteers come together to build and deliver beds to children who lack them. By providing beds and bedding to families in need, SHP offers kids a safe, comfortable place to sleep, promoting better health, well-being, and development.
Faculty members Caitlin James and Christina Wilbur recently volunteered with the Beaumont chapter of SHP. They built several beds for local children, describing the experience as well-organized with clear, easy-to-follow instructions. Both found it deeply rewarding to contribute to such a meaningful cause in their community.

SeaHawk Talk: Guiding Growth in the Digital Age
The "Digital Skinner Box" is an online learning environment that encourages exploration through optional assignments, adaptive release based on performance, and personalized learning paths. Engagement strategies like gamification and group competitions support active participation, while instructors provide guidance as students progress at their own pace. This approach promotes deeper understanding, reduces test anxiety, and helps build resilience, resulting in students engaging more meaningfully with the material.
This session presents a teaching method inspired by B.F. Skinner's theories on learning, designed to foster student autonomy, intrinsic motivation, and competency over traditional grades.

SeaHawk Talk: Dual Credit
Dual Credit provides an opportunity for high school students to earn high school credit and college credit simultaneously. The courses are applied towards both high school graduation requirements and the completion of a certificate or associate degree at Lamar State College Port Arthur.
LSCPA partners with local schools and home school parents to offer academic and technical courses via dual credit. Depending on the agreement, courses are offered at the student’s high school, on the Lamar State College Port Arthur campus, and/or online.
