Andragogy
What is it?
Scientific understanding and practice of adult learning and education
Greek words andr- (meaning "man" or "adult") and agogos (meaning "leading")
Dates back to the 19th century, but was first used by German educator Alexander Kapp in 1833
Recognition in the United States - Malcolm Knowles, an American educator and scholar, 1960s and 1970s.
1. Self-concept
As adults mature, they become more self-directed
2. Experience
Adults bring a wealth of experiences that shape their learning.
3. Readiness to learn
Adults are more ready to learn when theinformation is relevant to their lives or work.
4.Orientation to learing.
Adult learning is problem-centered ratherthan content-centered
5. Motivation
While external factors (e.g., job promotion) canmotivate adults, internal motivations (e.g., personal growth) are often stronger
Criticisms
Too rigid or oversimplifying the differences between child and adult learners.The concept of andragogy has remained influential, and many educators continue to use it as a foundation for designing adult education programs in various fields like corporate training, higher education, community education, and vocational training.
