Passport, OR Driver's license and social security card..what else do you want from me?

Social security card, photo id, and birth certificate so you know it's me.

00:30

Driver's license and my bank card for direct deposit. I'm here to get paid!

First day on the job? Welcome. You walk in ready to start the day and hop on a project. Instead, you're stopped at the front desk by Beth who says you have to wait for the HR lady. Sherry from HR arrives and takes you back to a small room and asks if you brought your items for onboarding. Dang, you should have read that email she sent last week telling you what to bring on day one. What items do new hires need?

01

correct!

That's right. You will have to fill out an "I-9" to show proof of eligibility to work in the United States. You can either use just a passport OR you can choose from Doc List B AND Doc LIst C. So a photo id from List B AND a birth certificate or social security card type item from List C.

There will be no training. Good luck.

Watch 10 videos on: Bloodborne Pathogens, Sexual Harassment,Safety Best Practices, History of the Company, How to use the online systems for requesting days off and getting paid,...umm, when is lunch? I have pizza.

I'm already trained. Didn't you see my degree??

Great, You've filled out your I-9. You are itching to set up your new office. But wait, you have to do some training first. What type of training do you think you will have to complete as a new hire?

02

MOST LIKELY YOUR FIRST DAY--OR TWO, WILL BE FILLED WITH TRAINING VIDEOS AND PAPERWORK. WHILE THAT MAY BE BORING AND UNPLEASANT AS YOU START TO FEEL LIKE A ZOMBIE BY THE 8TH VIDEO...SADLY, SOME PLACES LACK ENOUGH TRAINING AND EMPLOYEES ARE LEFT TO ...FIGURE IT OUT..WHICH WOULD YOU PREFER??

CORRECT!

Umm, sure I'll take the high deductible plan with the FSA.

00:30

I have to pay for insurance every month, even if I'm not sick?? Then I pay again if I actually go to a doctor? This can't be wright. I'll pass.

My parents have me on their insurance. I'm good.

Yes, you made it to lunch. Enjoy.Wait, 30 minutes is up? Okay, well now I must be ready to go set up my office. I brought a plant.Oh. We have to go over BENEFITS. Talking about health insurance for 2 hours. Sounds like fun. Wait, do I need health insurance?? I'm young and strong.

03

Correct!!

If a parent's health insurance plan covers dependents, you usually can be added to their plan and stay on it until you turn 26. (healthcare.gov)

I need to come up with a strategy that will help Bob and I learn excel and get caught up quickly. I can create a timeline for us to follow and find out what other resources the company may have to help us.

00:45

I'm going to tell Mike I can't work with Bob anymore. They can just give me a new partner.

I'm just going to do the project using Google Sheets. What's the big deal?

Well you made it through your first week and have completed onboarding. To help you get acclimated to your role, you are matched with a mentor. Bob is 62 and prefers using a notepad and pencil instead of Google Teams to work on projects. Management says everyone has to start using Microsoft Office Suite, but you've only used Google Docs to do work. You're trying to learn all the functions in Excel AND teach Bob what a spreadsheet can do. You are getting behind on your project and Mike, your manager, has already sent you 3 emails about your performance. What am I supposed to do? It's not my fault Bob is old and they haven't fired him yet.

04

CORRECT!

Your manager expects you to try everything you can before giving up or coming to them to fix the problem. You will have to work with people coming from all different backgrounds, skill levels, and values. Make it work.

Ooh, they took out state and federal taxes. And I'm stuck paying for this insurance until the next Open Enrollment. Sigh.

I didn't think it would be this drastic. Hmm, I'm going to go drop this insurance right now. I'd rather have my money than fix my teeth.

This can't be right. HR messing with my money!

You made it to pay day! You worked 2 weeks--80 hours. You get paid $20/hr. Yasss! $1600--we can go out tonight! Wait, what? Why is my check only $1251.67??? Who is FICA and when did I sign up for dental and vision insurance?

I'm going to go talk to Tony one-on-one and express my concerns and see if we can come up with some solutions together.

Welp, social media here I come. I'm going to tell everybody how I feel about this company and Tony who should have never gotten this job.

I'm going to email HR and complain because this is ruining my life. They better fix it.

Let Tony know I do not value his inexperienced opinion and I'm going to keep doing things the way I have been. I don't like all his new changes anyway.

I came in this morning and my manager Mike quit. Now we have a new manager, Tony, who doesn't have a clue what he's doing. Bob wants to know why they hired somebody new instead of him, who's been at the company for 30 years. I know just how to handle this.

Someone is there!

00:45

Let me go introduce myself. Perhaps this person doesn't realize how their actions are affecting their coworkers. Maybe they will understand and tone it down.

Ugh, I'm going to see if I can move my desk. I'd rather work next to that weird guy Chris who stares at me whenever I'm at the copy machine.

Without introducing myself, I just approach them and tell them they can't take calls on speaker phone and they can't bring smelly things for lunch. Other people work here too.

You get back from your meeting with Tony and learn a new hire has started and sits pretty close to your cubicle. They are talking on the phone very loudly and apparently just microwaved their fish and broccoli for their lunch. This can't be life.

01

00:45

Ask my supervisor if we can sit down and discuss my pay and what opportunities are available if I want to move up in my job.

Go ask HR for a raise. They are holding me back on purpose because Shelly, who handles payroll, doesn't like me.

Talk to a few people in the break room and see if they've gotten raises lately.

Well you have made it a full year at this job. Tony got a promotion and moved to another department. You've gotten really good remarks on all of you performance reviews. You believe a raise is due. So now what?

02

00:45

I'm going to give my manager a piece of my mind. He approves everyone else's time off but mine. Then I'm going to start doing the absolute least and see how he likes that.

I'm going to stop working past 5p every night. I have to scale back and find some balance. It will all get done.

Oh well. That's life. Keep plugging along because I don't want to get fired and if I keep putting in all these hours, maybe next time I'll get a raise or promotion.

Your manager says the budget is tight and no raises have been approved. He also denied all my time off requests in the system, but I am really starting to get burned out because I have been working late almost every night. I also had a weekend planned with some friends, now I have to cancel.
