When a disaster happens, it can leave people in need of immediate assistance. The American Red Cross is prepared to respond quickly to help those affected, providing financial assistance, shelter, food, and other necessary services.

Those impacted by a disaster or their loved ones can call the national Red Cross helpline by dialing 1-800-RED-CROSS. This hotline is available 24/7 to connect individuals to resources and initiate a response for help.

Once the request is received, the national Red Cross team relays the information to the local region where the disaster occurred. This ensures that local teams can assess and respond to the specific needs of the community as quickly as possible.

The local Duty Officer receives the information from the national dispatch and confirms the details of the disaster, usually by contacting the appropriate fire department. This step is critical to ensure that the response is accurate and that the appropriate resources are mobilized to assist those in need.

After verifying the situation, the local Duty Officer assigns the response to members of the Disaster Action Team (DAT). This team consists of trained volunteers who are responsible for providing direct assistance to the affected individuals and communities.

The Disaster Action Team arrives on-site and begins delivering essential services to the affected individuals. These services may include financial assistance, shelter, meals, health services, and mental health support, helping those affected recover from the immediate impact of the disaster.

The Disaster Action Team regularly communicates with the local Duty Officer, providing updates on the status of the response. This ensures that the efforts are well-coordinated and that any additional resources can be allocated as needed.

Once the immediate needs have been met and the situation is under control, the Duty Officer completes all necessary documentation of the response and officially closes the case. This final step ensures accountability and allows the Red Cross to track the outcomes of its efforts.
