How does the movement of Earth cause day, night and the seasons?

Days and Seasons

How does Earth's tilt cause the seasons?

Earth's Tilt and

The Seasons

GalLERY: Earth's Tilt

Earth's tilt is 23 1/2 degrees.

Earth is Tilted

So what if Earth is tilted!

+ Info

The biggest concequence of Earth's tilt are the seasons. The combination of Earth's tilt and Earth's revolution around the sun causes us to experience the 4 seasons.

Question 2

A year

The time that it takes for a planet to make one full revolution around the sun is called a year. For Earth it takes about 365.24 days to make 1 revolution. Therefore a year is 365.24 days.

A Leap year

Because it doesn't make sense to have a fraction of a day at the end of the year, we give ourselves an extra once every four years to compensate for the fraction of a year.During a leap year, February has 29 days instead of 28. A leap year has 366 days.

Question 3

~We can navigate by the stars.~

North Pole Star

Polaris! The North Star

+ Info

"Fortunately there is one star in the night sky that does not appear to move. It is called Polaris, or the North Star. It is directly overhead the North Pole. This means that whenever we point towards the spot on the horizon directly below the North Star, we must be pointing north."

Because of Earth's Tilt

We have seasons!

Look at the picture to the right. See how in this picture the nothern hemisphere is closer to the sun than the southern hemisphere. Because the northern hemisphere is a little closer to the sun, its days are longer and it recieves more heat. This causes summer for the northern hemisphere. The opposite is true for the southern hemisphere. When they are titlted away their days are shorter and they get less heat making things cooler. This causes the winter season.

At the two poles (North and South), the axis has even more drastic affects. Due to Earth's tilt, sometimes the poles experience full days of sun with no darkness or full days of darkness with no light.
