La Maestà del Duomo di Siena è una pala d’altare, alta quasi 4 metri. Per le sue dimensioni, per la complessità e qualità delle scene e per l’innovativa modulazione dello stile, è considerata la più importante pala d’altare della storia della pittura italiana. Sul lato rivolto verso i fedeli, è raffigurata la Madonna in trono con in braccio il Bambino e circondata da angeli, santi e i protettori della città. Sul lato posteriore, invisibile ai fedeli, la lettura dalla predella riprendeva con le storie dell’infanzia di Gesù e continuava con episodi della sua vita pubblica.
