The goal of this movement was to raise awareness, give a voice to survivors and change workplace conditions. With the hashtag bringing so much growth on all social media platforms, accountability was being pushed and could no longer be ignored.

The purpose and main goal

the #MeToo movement demanded change and was successfully working towards it. Survivors all across the world began speaking out and spread the movement globally. The movement was also serving to give out information and resources for survivors to heal and gain justice. The #MeToo bill in the US Congress resulted in setting requirements for harassment and discrimination awareness in training. This movement wanted to show that sexual harassment is a systemic issue and worked towards creating better structures that allow accountability, better protection, and justice.

Social media's impact

There were about 12 million responses within the first twenty-four hours on social media in 2017. #MeToo started with women in Hollywood speaking out, and then widely spread, creating a community online across all platforms. The hashtag was used 19 million times on Twitter within the first year, with many others sharing their personal stories and experiences. With media coverage and news articles on victims speaking out while exposing celebrities/public figures, reports were coming from many different viewpoints.

With many survivors sharing their stories online, the movement's growth continues. Social media allows us to view so many individual experiences that were hidden in the past. In this movement, women are no longer silenced and the need for change can no longer be ignored. The art created, posters seen in marches, and words typed online all come together to unite women to heal together and fight for systemic change. The hashtag served as a platform for survivors and victims to speak out and tell their stories. It was open to all of society to hear and for all survivors to speak. With so many individuals in support of #MeToo, the movement could not be ignored or silenced. Raising awareness helped change laws and policies in the workplace and in schools.

The movement's outcome

Hope and determination were big factors in getting others to join the movement and further systemic solutions. With social media, the spread of women and all survivors' struggles has been highlighted for the rest of the world to see and influenced changes in our society to be implemented.

The “Me Too” movement originally began in 2006 from activist Tarana Burke in support of sexual assault survivors. In 2017, the phrase made a comeback after women began speaking out about the abuse they endured by film producer Harvey Weinstein. The #MeToo movement started when actress Alyssa Milano posted on Twitter, encouraging others who have also experienced sexual harassment to share their stories

The #MeToo movement created a big impact on social media in giving a voice to women who were silenced for years by the assault, harassment, power dynamics, and gender inequalities occurring in the workplace. With the hashtag bringing so much growth on all social media platforms, accountability was being pushed and could no longer be ignored.
