GUIDED LECTIO DIVINA The practice of Lectio Divina is based on the belief that Christ is truly present in Scripture and that the reading of Scripture allows God to speak to us. The phrase Lectio Divina means “divine reading” in Latin and is a fitting name for this prayer practice of listening to Scripture with the ear of the heart. The traditional monastic practice includes scriptural reading, meditation and prayer intended to promote communion with God and to increase the knowledge of God's word. In the view of one commentator, it does not treat Scripture as texts to be studied, but as the living word. 1. Lectio (Read)Slowly read Job 42:1-17. Take your time and pay attention to any words or phrases that stand out to you. Key verses to focus on:

  • Job 42:2: "I know that you can do all things; no purpose of yours can be thwarted."
  • Job 42:5: "My ears had heard of you, but now my eyes have seen you."
  • Job 42:10: "The Lord restored his fortunes... the Lord gave him twice as much as he had before."
As you read, allow the words to settle in your mind and heart. What do you notice? 2. Meditatio (Reflect)Consider the words or phrases that stood out to you. Reflect on how they resonate with your life. Ask yourself:
  • How does Job’s response to God’s greatness speak to my own understanding of God?
  • Where in my life have I, like Job, experienced a moment of deep humility or transformation after hardship?
  • What does God’s restoration of Job teach me about hope and endurance?
Take a few minutes to sit with these questions, allowing space for personal reflection. 3. Oratio (Pray)Bring your reflections to God in prayer. Speak honestly about how the passage challenges or encourages you. You might pray:
  • A prayer of praise for God’s sovereignty and power.
  • A prayer for strength to endure and trust in God’s plans during difficult seasons.
  • A prayer for deeper awareness of God’s presence in your life, as Job experienced.
Allow your prayer to flow naturally from what you have read and reflected on. 4. Contemplatio (Rest in God’s Presence)Now, spend a few moments resting in the presence of God. Let go of words and thoughts, and simply be with God in stillness, trusting in his goodness and restoration. If your mind begins to wander, gently bring it back by repeating a word or phrase from the passage, like "I know that you can do all things" or "My eyes have seen you." 5. Actio (Take Action)Consider one small, concrete way you can live out the message of Job 42 this week. Perhaps you can:
  • Trust God more fully in a difficult situation you're facing.
  • Extend forgiveness or reconciliation to someone in your life, just as Job’s friends were restored.
  • Take time to reflect on how you’ve seen God’s goodness in your life and share that testimony with someone else.

Visio Divina is translated from Latin as “divine seeing.” It is related to the prayer form Lectio Divina (divine reading). But instead of Scripture, this form of prayer uses visual elements to help set your mind on prayer. It allows God to speak into your heart through the image. You are invited to experience this image below through Visio Divina. You can also continue on to read a devotional related to the passage of scripture and piece of art. Visio Divina Questions: What thoughts or feelings does this image evoke? Is there something God wants you to see? To hear? What kind of prayer rises within you as you ponder this work? Go ahead and express that to God now. A Restorer in His Workshop Full of Instruments,Painting by Claude Firmin (1864-1944),Painted in 1896,Oil on canvas© Museum Carvet, Avignon, France
