Water Pollution ESCAPE GAME
UN-Water needs you! Click start to know about the mission
Good Luck!
All over the world communities are at risk of ending up without safe water. Water resources are becoming scarce. Additonally, recent water analysis revealed that most of water is highly contaminated. Pollution is affecting the ecosystems from which people depends. The UN Water has requested for your help. As Global Water Leaders, you'll have to find what are the main causes of water pollution and propose some solutions.

If we imagine that 100 plastic bottles represents all the plastic produced and consumed until now, only 9 of them are recycled, 12 are incinerated, and the remaining 79 end up in the landfill and environment. The majority of waste found in the sees and oceans, around the 80% comes from the land. Click on the buttons to find out more and discover the password to proceed!

Another of the most concerning causes directly affecting water pollution is the industries: textile, mining, manufacturing, etc. The production of hazardous waste is estimated at around 3 million tons annually, with half of it coming from the industry. That's why we must become aware of the origin of what we buy and its creation process, as well as its consequences on the planet. Chemical and Organic Fertilizers
If insecticides, herbicides, and fungicides are used or disposed of incorrectly, they have the potential to contaminate groundwater with carcinogens and other hazardous chemicals.

Chemicals are one of the major water contaminants. Implemented in many industries they end up in water bodies through pipe discharges, pipe leaks, or storage tank leaks. Additionally, when these chemicals are discharged through a chimney (e.g., SO₂), they are released into the atmosphere and can eventually reach water bodies in the form of precipitation.
Plastic waste highly damages the ecosystems and marine life:
- Animals can die or seriously injure themselves
- Floating plastic items can help transport invasive species, that are a threat to ecosystems
- Microplastic are a threat also to human health. They have been found in drinking water, soils where we cultivate, beer...Plastic materials are carcinogenic
- Mining activities contribute to water contamination through acid mine drainage, heavy metals pollution, chemicals release, excessive erosion and sedimentation.
- Power plants can use coal to create heat. When coal is used as a fuel, water is required for creating steam, cooling, and other industrial processes. Wastewater can contain toxic metals and other contaminants.
- Oil refineries release contaminants such as heavy metals and nitrogen that are harmful to underwater life and ecosystems.
- If waste isn't managed properly it can highly damage the environment. Toxic substances can penetrate the earth and reach groundwater.

The fashion industry is one of the most polluting and environmentally impactful sectors. This is primarily due to the so-called 'fast fashion' or mass production of clothing, driven by periodic trends. According to UNEP, our clothing purchases have increased by 60 percent compared to 15 years ago. Water is contaminated through cotton farming, synthetic textile production, and microfibres that reach groundwaters and surface waters.
Plastic in the Ocean
Plastic waste takes a lot of time to decompose. It can take more or less time depending on the type of plastic and environmental conditions (light, oxygen, etc.) According to UNESCO, currently, there are about 50-75 trillion pieces of plastic and microplastics in the ocean

The main sources of water contamination in the livestock sector are:
- Veterniary medicines (antibiotics, hormones, vaccines, etc..)
- Manure
- Zoonotic waterborne pathogens: disease-causing microorganisms or pathogens that can be transmitted from animals to humans through water.
Chemical and Organic Fertilizers
They contain nitrate that is the most prevalent anthropogenic contaminant in groundwater. Its presence can favor harmful algae bloom in surface water.
Plastics in the Ocean
Plastic that we see at the surface of the oceans and seas is just the 15% of the total amount. Marine debris create floating garbage patches.
