Sustainable Projects: Designing a green space

A project where students will design a green space for their community.

Important Infomation

Grade Level: 5th Subject: Science Students will research environmental impacts in the world, work in groups, and create a plan the focuses on sustainability and community needs. ISTE Standard: Students select and use digital tools to collect date and analyze it. Mississippi State Standard: Students will obtain, eveluate, and communicate information about how human activites can affect the Earth's systems.

Elements of learning

The nine elements of project-based learning and how they are incorporated into this lesson.

A video about the importance of green spaces will introducte students to sustainability.

Task

Students will create a proposal for a green space.

Directions

Form groups of 4-5 students.

Create a chart with the benefits of green spaces.

Create a slideshow that includes plants that will thrive, needs of the community, and how this space will impact the world.
Research information about plants, environmental impact, and community needs.

Students will work in groups of 4-5 to create their design to promote teamwork.

Conduct reseach on native plants and community needs to make informed decsions.

Students can choose the type of green space that want to create. This can be a garden, park, playground, etc.

Feedback and reflection

The teahcer will go around to each group to help with designs and research.

They will present their designs to the class and invite their peers to fill out Google Forms for feedback.

Students will write a 150-300 word reflection on what they learned and how their group memebers were.

Rubic

Research Quality- depth and relevance of information collected. Design Creativity- originality and practicality of the green space design. Collaboration & Teamwork- evidence of team collaboration and role fulfillment. Presentation Skills - clarity, engagement, and use of technology during the presentation. Reflection- insightfulness and depth of the personal reflection.

Students will be graded on a 100 point scale with each category being worth 20 points,

Student Reflection:The student reflection will not be graded but is suggested to complete for classroom data.
