Increasing Interaction and Engagement Action Plan

Create structured peer discussion forums where students can engage in meaningful conversations about course topics. Encourage students to share their experiences, ask questions, and provide feedback to one another. To facilitate this, assign roles within the discussions, such as discussion leader, summarizer, and questioner. Hook learners by having them pose the inquiry questions, update and favorite, and pare down into discussion topics. Break students up into groups based on discussion preference.

Social Presence

This strategy enhances social presence by fostering a sense of community and collaboration. Students will feel more connected to their peers, which can lead to increased motivation and participation in the learning process.I think this prevents the sage on-the-stage mentality of what I, as the instructor knows, and how to be more of a facilitator to the learning. It is easy to sit and lecture, but giving up control of the conversation and letting the student's voice be the driver can be scary. I think practicing it as the learner before experiencing it as the instructor might showcase just how much their students have to offer.

Rationale

Course development will be created over this academic school year. Leveraging insights from this year's cohorts of B.O.O.T., information from our marketing campaign to faculty, and input from our two campus-wide faculty committees. The course will go live at BOY in the 2025-2025 Academic School Year. Action Research will be done implementing these strategies in ongoing training given throughout the year to further get input on the active learning strategies they want to see modeled and information they wish to have presented.

Timeline

Survey 1: is a goal-setting template. To gain a better understanding of what learners hope to get out of the training. I can use this data to inform what components in their personalized learning plan are most essential and whether their quiz data set them on a path that will meet their needs. Quiz 1: Will determine pathways of learning based on self-reflection and competency of the LMSEOC: The survey is designed to capture learner engagement at the EOC of the course, ask questions, critique the presenter, and rate content and delivery.EOC 1:1 interview: this is a much more informal way to gather anecdotal evidence of learning, realign learning to initial goals, and what next steps for implementation of learning. Course analytics will show user completion rates, interaction reports, and timeframes for engagement to best align future course improvement.s

Tracking

Introduce the topic of andragogy vs. pedagogy, which we tend to use both in higher ed, but our learners are adults, and therefore, some strategies need to reflect the needs of that learner population. Interactive stopping points throughout the video will keep learners engaged and prevent them from stalling out over dry topics. Using guided notes, and stopping for emphasis, and filling out notes in important areas will also level video creation and break up content.

Cognitive Presence

Interactive video lectures cater to diverse learning styles and help learners synthesize information in real time. This strategy can enhance comprehension and retention of course content, ultimately leading to deeper learning. This will be housed in Canvas, our LMS- we are developing a continuation of our Basics of Online Teaching Course. B.O.O.T. is a requirement for all instructors who teach in a hybrid or online learning environment at our university. We are building Re-BOOT to capture where those who are or have taught online may need additional support and refreshers on learning and research that may have changed since the first training. We are interested in how many are investing in andragogy principles even through the lens of pedagogy and how this impacts the learners.

Rationale

Canvas LMS - one of the strategies for organization and personalization is to use Mastery Paths. Based on answers on a quiz, learners will be directed toward content that matches mastery from their self-reflection. There will be graded, incomplete/ complete/ and marked as Done components to track progress through the learning materials.

Implementation

The video components will be a marriage between Camtasia and Yuja for the interactive components and data tracking. Embedding the video content into a discussion will create the floor for the student's inquiries to take shape. The on-board liking and commenting features will parse the inquiries into discussion sets. One of the things I will carry over from my previous B.O.O.T. course is a 1:1 EOC virtual meeting. I have a list of questions that help guide the reflection, but it gives a face-to-face component for learners to engage with content and myself and rehash any misunderstandings or opportunities they want to see in the future. In the EOC survey data, this was the most highly rated portion of the whole course.

Implement a structured approach for regular check-ins with students. This may include weekly updates and designated times for students to ask questions or voice concerns. Incorporate social-emotional strategies by creating a safe space for students to share their feelings and experiences. Utilize video conferencing tools to facilitate face-to-face interactions, enhancing connection and support.

Teaching Presence

Students will feel more supported and valued by prioritizing regular check-ins, fostering a sense of belonging. This approach helps build trust and rapport and promotes self-regulation and emotional well-being, contributing to a more engaging and responsive learning environment. It will model for instructors how to incorporate self-regulation skills into online courses but also teach regulation strategies for them as learners to implement. I will add some research on burnout, and self-regulation on teaching and learning, in addition to the support for students.
