The discovery of america
America is a continent! Before Columbus arrived, the Americas were home to diverse and advanced civilizations. These societies had rich cultures, complex social structures, and significant achievements in various fields.Numerous Indigenous peoples inhabited North and South America, each with unique languages and traditions. They developed a deep connection with the land, utilizing natural resources sustainably and fostering a range of social structures from nomadic to settled communities.Civilizations such as the Maya and Aztec flourished in the Americas. The Maya were known for their advancements in mathematics and astronomy, while the Aztec empire excelled in agriculture and architecture.
history
the american continent
In 1492, Columbus set sail across the Atlantic Ocean, sponsored by Spain. He aimed to find a direct route to Asia but instead landed in the Bahamas, mistaking them for the East Indies. This voyage started the European exploration and colonization of the Americas. The arrival of Columbus and subsequent Europeans drastically affected Indigenous populations. Initial contact included trade and cooperation, but soon led to conflict, exploitation, and devastating diseases, drastically reducing indigenous populations across the Americas.
European nations sought new resources, wealth, and land. Religious freedom also motivated settlers, particularly in the case of Pilgrims and Puritans fleeing persecution.
The New World presented great opportunities for European powers. They sought gold, land, and resources, leading to further expeditions and settlements. Therefore, they created colonies in the new continent.
history
the new colonies
The English colonies in North America did not want to stay under British control. In 1773, they started a revolution, which they won in 1783, creating the United States. Only Canada stayed with Britain. This inspired the colonies in South America to fight for their freedom, too. By 1825, most South American countries were independent, but many struggled with poverty, political problems, and inequality, with rich landowners treating poor farmers unfairly. In North America, indigenous were often killed or forced onto reservations, which were controlled areas. In the 1800s, the United States grew and moved west (towards the far west). It developed quickly, adding new states and becoming politically stable.
history
the united states
The States gradually conquered the rest of the territory.A major event to remember is the Civil War between the Northern and the Southern States (1861-65).This dramatic phase of U.S. history ended with the total defeat of the South and the final abolition of slavery (1865).
There are 50 States in the US. Over the 19th and 20th century, the US became one of the most influential countries of the world.
