Introduction

Digital Art explores the transformational curve of visual arts into digital arts. The basic concepts of visual arts, including perspective, elements of composition, color theory, and color psychology, aspects of visual design, and integrated arts practices will be introduced. As they progress through the course, learners will create a portfolio of digital art. By the end of the course, learners develop an appreciation for the relevance and application of digital art in the contemporary world in fields like media, entertainment, education, design, and the arts itself.

Art in Context I: The Origins of Digital Art and Preparing to Create

What is Digital Art?

  • Digital art, sometimes called computer art or multimedia art, includes any artwork created through the use of software, computers, or other electronic equipment or devices. Digital equipment is used during the artist's creative process or to present these works to viewers. The artist's works may include animations, illustrations, photographs, paintings, and videos. Digital art can be computer-generated, scanned, or even hand-drawn using a tablet and a computer mouse.

What is Digital Art?

Origins of Digital Art

The origins of digital art begin with the invention of the computer. The computer, as we know it today is an electronic machine, capable of running different programs that make it possible to learn, work, and communicate. But the first computers were enormous machines without screens, often taking up entire walls or a whole room. These computers were largely used in scientific and medical labs. It was necessary for the people using them to understand the language of punch cards and coding; the original computer languages were systems of punch cards, large disks, and manually-entered codes. Over time, the processors inside of the machines were shrunk down to a microchip. This made desktop computers and laptops possible

Origins of Digital Art

In the 1950s, an artist and composer named John Whitney began using computers to create abstract animations. He would pair them with his musical compositions or the music of other artists. Together with an illustrator named Saul Bass, they made an animated title sequence for a movie called Vertigo by the famous filmmaker Alfred Hitchcock. In 1960, John Whitney created Motion Graphics Incorporated, and created artwork using a computer that he built specifically for the purposes of moving digital artwork.

Origins of Digital Art

In the 1980s, digital photography became available, which gave rise to Adobe Photoshop in 1988. Another program, called Corel Painter, was created and released the next year. Macintosh computers were invented and used for creative purposes, in business and at home.

Origins of Digital Art

The term digital art was first used in the early 1980s. At that time, computer engineers, along with artist Harold Cohen, created a paint program known as AARON. This program was the first ever to create an original piece of artwork! It can draw lines, mix colors, and paint." I wrote it to discover what independent (machine) intelligence might do, given some knowledge of the world and some rudimentary physical capabilities. And, in the process, to have IT teach ME about possibilities I hadn't imagined."- Harold Cohen, British artist

Origins of Digital Art

Later, in the 1990s, it became possible to download videos onto computers. Although digital video is common today, at the time, this amazing advancement allowed artists to begin manipulating images they had filmed. For the first time, artists had the ability to cut, paste, and move images, altering and enhancing what was there.
