About JPoint

Where Ideas Meet Action

JPoint is an alt-consultancy that mobilizes when it matters most

CONSIDER:

  • What does it mean to be an "alt-consultancy" in today's world?
  • How do we do things differently -- and why does it matter?

Management Consultancy has a rich history. One that we will go over in the next part of the JPoint Onboarding series. Click here to get a sneak peek of our approach and how JPoint takes consulting beyond the traditional mold.

Design + Storytelling

Design + Storytelling

At JPoint, design + storytelling aren't just services; they're essential tools for meaningful change

In the next sections, we'll explore our approach to Design + Storytelling and then dive into our portfolio of work.

About JPoint

Design

Design

At JPoint, design is about forging and reflecting real connection between people, projects, and their impact

With experts in behavioral science, especially risk perception, persuasion, and visual communication, JPoint takes design seriously.

We work with teams, companies, departments, and public sector programs to collaboratively develop branding and identity that reflects their values and communicates clearly.

At JPoint we do not just "pretty up" communication materials; instead, we work to first understand the audience(s), objectives, and user experience for the product. Then we collaborate to design a solution that meets those goals based in comms research and promoting team joy whenever possible.

About JPoint

Storytelling

Storytelling

Storytelling for change leverages methods that touch our deep need for connection and meaning

BENEFITS OF STORYTELLING:

Enables participants to process and share their experiences for validation and support.

Helps people retain sense of purpose through the inevitable messiness and unknown.

Helps changed teams rebuild a shared identity.

JPoint staff have designed and supported storytelling efforts through a variety of changes and disruptions:

  • Community recovery in Mississippi after Hurricane Katrina
  • “Hero’s Journey” narrative development for internal communications initiatives
  • Survivor storytelling campaigns in support of the National Flood Insurance Program

Portfolio of Work

Portfolio of Work

Specializing in comms around disaster, disruption, and change, JPoint combines a mix of flexibile capabilities to address issues of impact

The following slides showcase examples of JPoint’s impactful projects. Explore how we’ve partnered with clients to bring their visions to life.

Portfolio of Work

TCWP

Texas Community Watershed Partners

In the wake of Hurricane Harvey, a team of scientists, conservationists, and public servants has committed to empower people to reduce risk and build resilience in their communities

TCWP is situated within a land-grant university structure, which gives it a robust set of stakeholders (and contributors), but adds complexity – currently they manage 6 different areas, with 13 different websites (defining shared identity and coordinating efforts is a challenge).

TCWP has been successful in engaging the public using two technical solutions: WeTABLE/CHARM and Community Viz, which put citizens in the driver’s seat for their own learning and action.

With new funding from Harvey, the team needs some research (survey), strategy, and communications support. We are working with them to develop and roll out two new software products, a new website, and a new collateral package to help them better connect with their audiences.

Portfolio of Work

CA Public Health

California Dept of Public Health

We are lighting a fire under climate change adaptation

JPoint collaborators have led funded research projects on wildfire perception, communication, and adaptation in the wildland-urban interface.

More recently, we developed creative products for preventing the one-two punch of flood after fire.

We are also working to address integrated hazards – producing guidance for wildfire smoke and nuclear detonation.

Portfolio of Work

FEMA Equity Gaps

FEMA Equity Gaps

A new federal equity mandate has highlighted the need for tools that center diverse populations

We worked with FEMA to develop new methods for comprehensively assessing and addressing equity gaps for its mitigation grant programs, which together represent over $3.2B in grant dollars, distributed annually.

Our approach focused on connecting DEIAJ+ work to broad, systems-based patterns, and equipping audiences with practical tools for integrating principles into their work.

With customized workshops and integrated project support, we prepared teams to use the right tools to integrate equity into project decision-making, from design to delivery.

Portfolio of Work

CISA

Cybersecurity & Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA)

Design-thinking helped clarify a mission, empower communicators, and bring teams together

JPoint team members helped CISA stand up their first cyber supply chain risk management (C-SCRM) PMO, centralizing C-SCRM activities and efforts across the agency.

Outcomes include:

  • Centralized efforts and reduced duplication of work
  • Resiliency when managing conflict and change
  • Enhanced decision-making skills and readiness in a dynamically-changing field

This effort involved developing a program organizational structure, strategy, and communications, as well as figuring out how this new organization would fit in CISA and interact with the broader cyber ecosystem (both internal and external communications).

We helped translate and communicate technical information around cybersecurity supply chain risk management to non-technical personnel by reducing the complexity of technical program language and increasing broader understanding of program value and impact.

Portfolio of Work

COVID-19

COVID-19

If COVID-19 proved anything, it’s that our health is shared

Churches: JPoint worked with the federal Office of Faith Based and Neighborhood Partnerships to pursue flexible funding models for churches to receive reimbursement for upgrading their HVAC systems.

Pandemic leaders: With the Truman National Security Project, we developed a storytelling policy improvement initiative to enable pandemic decision-makers to share and process their experiences and improve pandemic readiness nationwide.

Ionizers: We worked with clean air scientists and pandemic communicators to discourage the use of under-tested and possibly harmful additive technology in homes, schools, and churches.

FEMA's CRS

FEMA's Community Rating System (CRS)

By redesigning FEMA’s Community Rating System (CRS) to be more agile, our team helps programs better prepare for a risky future

Working closely with FEMA, Clear Vista members developed a change management approach that combines John Kotter’s and William Bridges’ models into a plan that anticipates the changes the CRS program will undergo, and the transition FEMA employees and stakeholders will experience as they process the changes.

The approach is iterative and cumulative, building on the accomplishments of previous years. Each year we work with program leadership to identify a new change focus that will guide the stakeholder engagement strategy for that year. This is critical for the successful adoption and implementation of the new CRS program.

This multi-year project was launched by FEMA in 2022. Currently in its second year, the team has established an expert working group of change champions, a clear initiative vision and goals, and data-driven/evidenced based program alternatives.

To garner trust and buy-in, we developed a stakeholder engagement strategy that brings program partners and stakeholders together along the change process, communicating throughout and engaging for input.

KBR

Kellog Brown & Root (KBR)

Executive coaching is a powerful way to support change by investing in people – strengthening their leadership skills and resilience

When KBR reorganized the General Counsel’s office, Clear Vista provided leadership coaching to the General Counsel’s direct reports.

“Zsofia helped me crystallize my driving needs at work and perhaps everywhere else too. The coaching propelled me to be more thoughtful and strategic in advancing my career, achieving work objectives, and leveraging my strengths effectively.”

The coaching sessions supported directors and higher-level executives in adapting to new roles and responsibilities resulting from the reorganization. As part of the coaching package, leaders underwent Emotional Intelligence (EQi) and Birkman assessments to facilitate self-reflection.

The coaching conversations focused on navigating change by enhancing adaptive leadership skills, such as resilience, flexibility, and agility. At the end of the engagements, leaders reported the following benefits: Buy-in to the new organizational structure

  • Increased confidence in their new role
  • Shift out of feeling “devalued”
  • Ability to effectively communicate difficult decisions
  • Improved emotional intelligence
