Adrian is a newer instructor who is 4 weeks into their third term of teaching.
One of their students just found that their grades are not adding up based on the class syllabus!
Adrian goes to check their gradebook and their is no structure left.
They thought they had put the gradebook together the first term they taught this course!
Adrian takes a deep breathe and takes ACTION!
They jump in and compare their syllabus to their current gradebook and make the fix!
How does she do this though?
Let's find out. Then you can do it to!
Let's look at Adrian fixing up their gradebook!
This fix was done by comparing the gradebook in Moodle to the grade setup of their syllabus.
Let's Explore
There are two key components to fixing most gradebooks:
Categories
&
Weights
Categories
Add categories to match your syllabus and add your gradebook items to the categories.
Weights
Adjust the weights to match your syllabus. If you don't use weights make sure there are none set!
One Last Step!
Look for indicators of various additional settings to ensure they are applied intentionally.
Gradebook Overrides
Drop the Lowest
Include/Exclude Empty Grades

Take Survey
Include and Exclude empty grades do two different things. The default, exclude empty grades, is most often preferred. Include empty grades will mark any empty grade as 0, meaning students will start with a 0 or F for the course.
Drop the lowest is utilized to drop the lowest number of grades from category totals. When used intentionally this is fine but be sure you are wanting to drop the lowest. Edit the category to edit this setting.
Gradebook overrides can prevent automatically graded items from updating. It can also cause categories to no longer update. Overrides should only be applied to manual grade items or when entering 0's for activities!
