Research

Can we take similar steps towards our own goals? What unique circumstances allowed them to get where they are?

Research the career path of someone at the height of their career, such as a CEO or First Minister of Wales.

Profile of Success
Job Hunt Time Machine
  • In groups, you’ll brainstorm traits that contribute to success, think about how to develop those traits, and discuss real-life examples of people who embody them.
  • Then, we’ll use your ideas to create a descriptive prompt for an image generation tool to visualise what success looks like.
  • Finally, we’ll reflect on what the image teaches us about success – any surprises or insights!
  • In this activity, we will be travelling forward in time to ten years from now, when you are working in your high-flying career!
  • You will need to find or create a brief job description for your role, so you can understand what this career entails.
  • Then, write a letter or record a video message to yourself today, giving advice and encouragement to your younger self, today!

"Soft skills like communication and teamwork are more important than technical skills for long-term career success."

What skills do you think will be most in demand over the next five to ten years? How could we start developing these skills today?

Do you agree or disagree with this statement and why?

Describe something new you discovered during the project that you found interesting or surprising.

Is there a particular topic or area you found during the project that you would like to explore more about? What specific questions do you still have?

What parts of the project did you enjoy the most and why? Were there any aspects that you found challenging or less enjoyable?

How do you think the knowledge you gained from this project might be useful to you in the future? Can you think of ways it might influence your daily life or future choices?

"Being well-rounded is more important than having one exceptional strength."

What is more important for career success: playing to your strengths or improving your weaknesses?Think about how building on strengths or improving weaknesses could impact your career growth.

Do you agree or disagree with this statement? Think about whether a balanced skill set or one standout strength would benefit you more in your career.

Double Vision Board
Barrier Breakers
  • Create a Vision Board to help visualise your dream career!
  • You should paste images and words onto a piece of card or paper, to create a visual display.
  • Then, reflect on why this is your dream career. What makes this so exciting for you?
  • Finally, you should make a second, smaller vision board with another career that ticks as many of the same boxes as the first one as possible.
  • It's time to break some barriers!
  • On sheets of paper, you will need to write down some barriers to achieving your employment goals (e.g. no experience, no qualifications, etc.)
  • Then, as a group, brainstorm ways of overcoming these barriers.
  • When you have a good strategy, tear through the paper, symbolising breaking the barrier!

Design an exciting TikTok video to promote a new business in Wales. Choose to promote either a trendy café or a streetwear clothing store. Include a catchy title, engaging visuals, information, and music. Add Welsh elements like local landmarks or some Welsh language. Storyboard, film, and edit your TikTok to make it stand out and effectively promote the business.

I Like Your Style
  • You will be working in groups to remember and recite a sequence of items.
  • Each group will try a different method: looking at pictures, listening to audio, or handling items.
  • You will be rotating so everyone tries each method.
  • How many will you remember?
Sensory Stations

How are your senses?

  • You will be visiting different stations to experience sights, sounds, smells, tastes, and textures. Your reactions will be added to our Word Cloud.
  • This activity will help you build your personal profile.

Positive Spin
Strength Chain

SPIN THE WHEEL

  • In this activity, you will spin a wheel with various perceived areas for growth.
  • You will work together to find a positive angle for each one.
  • We will explore examples where an "area for growth" could actually be a strength.
  • This will help reframe how we see our own and others’ qualities.
  • In this activity, you will write down your strengths on a strip of paper.
  • You will link the strips together to create a strength chain.
  • We will brainstorm activities where these strengths can shine.
  • This will show how each person’s skills contribute to our collective potential.

Identify Identity!

Based on your research, what learnings can you take from their personal journey?

Research a well-known public figure who shares similar values or cultural background with you, and explore how their identity has influenced their personal or professional success.

Research what skills employers are looking for, from a regional standpoint, but also in specific industries, relevant to your goals and interests.

What skills are employers looking for in Wales, and further afield?

Overcoming Major Challenges

Provide a specific example of a challenge that either has been overcome, or that people are working on.

Identify a major challenge in your field of interest and research how industry professionals use specific strengths to navigate or overcome this challenge.

Create a Personal Profile

Considerations:

In the worksheet, we will brainstorm careers that excite you, we will figure out which job roles match with your core skills and transferable skills, and finally, we will look at some interview questions, to practice your responses.

In your project worksheets, please begin the next section on Employability Skills.

  • Consider careers and industries that you find exciting, not just job roles.
  • Try to aim high. It's fine to want to look at entry level jobs, but think about your next steps after that, and the next steps after that, and so on!
  • Think about your transferable skills. Perhaps you are a skilled footballer. It could mean you are good at working in a team, or that you are coordinated.

The aim here is to outline a journey to reach your ultimate goal, by pinpointing important milestones along the way.

Continuing with your Project Worksheet, here we will outline your personal Roadmap to Success

Remember:

Your roadmap should include:

This plan is for your own personal benefit. Of course things change, and your goals tomorrow may not be the same as today, but you can always use this process to help you with any goals throughout your life.

Project:

  • Milestone and Stretch Goals
  • Identified barriers and solutions
  • A commitment to taking first steps
  • Reflections on your plans

"Ambition without a detailed plan is more valuable than a detailed plan without ambition."

Do you agree or disagree with this statement? What do you think the statement means? Can you see both sides of the argument?

What role does flexibility play in achieving your long-term goals, and how can you adapt to unforeseen challenges? Think about what elements of your goals are concrete, and which elements are negotiable.

Create a Personal Profile

You have been tasked with creating a personal profile for yourself, detailing helpful information for you to understand who you are, and what it means to be specifically and uniquely you.

Considerations for your profile:

  • Sell Yourself: Try to use persuasive language when talking about yourself in your profile. Although this profile is just for you, you should imagine that you are writing it to apply for your dream job!
  • Define your Values: Identify what your personal values are, and consider what values you would like in your employer. Consider why these values may be useful for an employer to know.
  • Showcase your Personality: Consider what are the personality traits that make you who you are, and think about why these make you likeable or interesting. Even the ones you may see as negative.
  • Celebrate your Culture and Background: What are some things from your culture or your background that you take pride in? How does your cultural background pepper your identity?
  • Likes and Dislikes: Sometimes, the things we like or dislike can have a profound impact in who we are. Things like musical taste, favourite football team, or fashion style can be major parts of your identity
  • Anything else: Think about anything else that might be important to you, and how it makes up who you are.

Strengths & Growth Plan

Project:

- book some driving lesson - follow through the worksheet.

  • In this part of the project, you’ll reflect on your key strengths and areas you’d like to improve.
  • You’ll also outline steps to turn those weaknesses into growth opportunities.
  • This plan will help you understand your unique skills and set goals for personal development.

Considerations:

  • Be Honest with Yourself: Identify your true strengths and aras for growth. This is a personal exercise, so focus on areas that matter to you.
  • Think About Growth Strategies: For each area for growth, brainstorm realistic steps you can take to improve, such as practicing a skill or seeking feedback.
  • Set Achievable Goals: Focus on small, actionable goals that can lead to gradual improvement over time.
  • Review and Reflect Regularly: Revisit your plan often to track your progress and adjust your strategies as needed.

"You must conform to societal expectations in order to succeed."

How do your personal values and cultural background influence the decisions you make in your daily life and long-term career aspirations?Think about how you make difficult decisions in your day to day life. What drives you to make these decisions? Your friends? Your upbringing? Your teachers?

Do you agree or disagree with this statement? Think about what success means to you. Success could refer to wealth, or happiness, or simply safety and security.
