12. RESPONSIBLE CONSUMPTION AND PRODUCTION

isabel

Goal 12 is about ensuring sustainable consumption and production patterns, which is key to sustain the livelihoods of current and future generations. Unsustainable patterns of consumption and production are root causes of the triple planetary crises of climate change, biodiversity loss and pollution.

Our planet is running out of resources, but populations are continuing to grow. If the global population reaches 9.8 billion by 2050, the equivalent of almost three planets will be required to provide the natural resources needed to sustain current lifestyles. We need to change our consumption habits, and shifting our energy supplies to more sustainable ones are one of the main changes we must make if we are going to reduce our consumption levels. However, global crises triggered a resurgence in fossil fuel subsidies, nearly doubling from 2020 to 2021.

For this reason, SDG 12 and the other sustainable development goals were established and ratified by world leaders in September 2015, at a historic United Nations summit, and later officially came into force on January 1, 2016.

The economic and social progress developed in the last century has been linked to environmental degradation that endangers our future development and survival. Since the 1970s, Earth overshoot Day has not stopped coming closer. In 2019, in the space of 7 months, all the natural resources that are capable of regenerating Earth's ecosystems in a year were consumed.

facts and figures: · an estimated 17% of total food available to consumers is wasted · from 2000 to 2019, total domestic material consumption rose by more than 65% globally · Food that ends up in landfills generates 8% to 10% of global greenhouse gas emissions · If people worldwide switched to energy efficient light bulbs the world would save US$120 billion annually. · Renewables represent over a third (36.1%) of developing countries’ total electricity-generating capacity · In 2020, an estimated 13.3% of the world’s food was lost after harvesting and before reaching retail markets

Goals:· IMPLEMENT THE 10-YEAR SUSTAINABLE CONSUMPTION AND PRODUCTION FRAMEWORK · SUSTAINABLE MANAGEMENT AND USE OF NATURAL RESOURCES · HALVE GLOBAL PER CAPITA FOOD WASTE · RESPONSIBLE MANAGEMENT OF CHEMICALS AND WASTE · SUBSTANTIALLY REDUCE WASTE GENERATION (e.g. circular economy) · ENCOURAGE COMPANIES TO ADOPT SUSTAINABLE PRACTICES AND SUSTAINABILITY REPORTING · PROMOTE SUSTAINABLE PUBLIC PROCUREMENT PRACTICES · PROMOTE UNIVERSAL UNDERSTANDING OF SUSTAINABLE LIFESTYLES · SUPPORT DEVELOPING COUNTRIES' SCIENTIFIC AND TECHNOLOGICAL CAPACITY FOR SUSTAINABLE CONSUMPTION AND PRODUCTION (E.g. clean green initiative) · DEVELOP AND IMPLEMENT TOOLS TO MONITOR SUSTAINABLE TOURISM · REMOVE MARKET DISTORTIONS THAT ENCOURAGE WASTEFUL CONSUMPTION

El Salvador is the country that has contributed the most to this SDG according to statistics

There are 12 main countries that work towards the fulfillment of SDG 12: Senegal, Bolivia, Peru, Colombia, El Salvador, Ecuador, Nicaragua, Guatemala, Mozambique, Mali, Palestine and Honduras.

El salvador's Iniciatives: 1. National environmental policy and plans The National Waste Management Strategy. 2. Circular economy and waste management Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) 3. Promotion of sustainable agriculture This includes support for organic farming and low-impact farming methods. 4. Education and awareness Sustainable consumption campaigns. 5. Sustainable tourism El Salvador has promoted ecotourism and the conservation of natural landscapes. 6. Energy efficiency Renewable energy initiatives. 7. Private sector participation Sustainable business practices. 8. International agreements and alliances agenda 2030.

Some of the many factors that hinder sustainable development in these countries are: 1. The persistence of poverty: 30.2% of the population, of which 62 million, 10.2%, live in extreme poverty. 2. inequalities and privileges: Latin America and the Caribbean continue to be the most unequal regions in the world. 3. gaps in education, health and access to basic services: Higher education is still reserved for a small proportion of the population, the mortality rate among indigenous children is almost double that of non-indigenous children. 4. Emerging obstacles: Violence, natural disasters, migrations, climate change, technological changes, etc.

European countries continue to lead the SDG index (in the Top 10) and are on track to achieving more goals than any other region. By contrast, Lebanon, Yemen, Papua New Guinea, Venezuela and Myanmar have the highest number of SDG targets heading in the wrong direction.

What can you do? · go to beaches, lakes or parks to pick up litter · Don’t keep clothes or other items you are not using, Donate them · don't just buy fruits that look nice, fruit and veg that isn't its usual shape is just as good · recycle · choose reusable products · buy second-hand · keep showers short and don't leave the tap open when brushing teeth, excessive water use is bad for the environment · buy sustainable products (e.g. organic foods with eco-friendly packaging) · support fairtrade associations · drink tap water instead of bottled water (when safe to do so)

Achieving SDG 12: Responsible Consumption and Production, has numerous benefits. It reduces environmental impact by cutting greenhouse gas emissions, preserving ecosystems, and improving air and water quality. It also conserves natural resources, prevents overfishing and deforestation, and promotes a circular economy through waste reduction and recycling. SDG 12 brings economic advantages such as resource efficiency and job creation, leading to sustainable growth and improved health.

now it's time for a quiz!
