Quariwarmi (Peru) In Incan society, androgynous, third-gender ceremonial attendants for the dual-gendered god Chuqui Chinchay, often identified for the role during childhood.
Sekrata (Madagascar) AMAB children raised as girls in the Antandroy and Hova sub-groups of the Savakala ethnic group. They're considered a third gender (not transgender) and have a respected spiritual role in society.
Hijra (South Asia) AMAB people in India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh who adopt a feminine gender identity. Most do not consider themselves to be men, women, or trans, but a distinct third gender.
Calabai, Calalai, & Bissu (Indonesia) The Bugi people of southern Sulawesi recognize three sexes (male, female, intersex) and five genders: men, women, calabai, calalai, and bissu. Calabai: AMAB people who embody a feminine gender identity. Calalai: AFAB at birth who embody a male gender identity.Bissu: A "transcendent gender," either encompassing all genders or none at all. Sometimes intersex.
Two-Spirit (Native American) Umbrella term for indigenous third genders in North America. Refers to people (of any assigned sex) who combine a variety of gender expressions in their presentation and often serve social and spiritual roles within their nations.
Tāhine & Irawhiti (Maori) Mixed-gender people (Tahine) and people with a gender that "changes, moves, crosses over, or is associated with change" (Irawhiti).
