Design the Interview Process

How many people should be interviewed?

  • Reference your hiring matrix
  • Consider the number of viable candidates
  • Try to avoid only interviewing one candidate.

Module 3

Determine the number and type of interview sessions based on candidate viability and stakeholder involvement. Limit panel interviews to four or five to avoid intimidation, designating one interviewer as the leader and others in support roles.

How many Interview Sessions?

Telephone or video prescreen interviews assess an applicant's qualifications, experience, skills, and salary alignment with the position. They help narrow the candidate pool and evaluate communication skills, clarify resume details, and discuss job changes and salary.

Interviewers conduct initial interviews to screen applicants based on general qualifications. Follow-up interviews assess specific qualities and cultural fit while allowing candidates to research the company further.

Plan for Each Stage

Who will ask the questions/what role will the search participants play in each interview?

How many questions should each interview have?

Module 3

Plan a 30-minute slot for questions and next steps, with 1 hour for in-person interviews with one or a few interviewers, and 1.25 to 1.5 hours for panel interviews, depending on the panel's engagement level.

Phone interviews should include 6 to 10 questions, while in-person interviews should have 10 to 15 well-crafted questions to assess the candidate's suitability and allow time for their questions, making the interview a two-way process.

The number of questions typically remains the same regardless of whether there is one interviewer or a panel, but the interview duration may vary, and it’s important to allocate time at the end for candidates to ask questions.
