Hey, how was your day? My day started out great until I started passing out, worksheets to my students. While passing them out I overheard a group of students whispering, "Are we doing worksheets again? Why can't we do something different?" I felt awful after hearing that. I wish there was a way I could make my class more interactive and fun.
Teaching with Technology
Oh no, I'm sorry to hear that! But do you really only use worksheets to teach in your classroom?
I loved that conference! Since then I have decided to integrate technology, but I use the SAMR method..
Well, after our summer conference about integrating technology into the classroom, I used the TPACK method.
Well yes! What do you guys use to teach?
Absolutely, let's get started! So TPACK is a method that is basically a grid/guide that helps you understand how to teach concepts with technology. There are three knowledges you must know to effectively integrate technology. The three knowledges are: pedagogical, content, and technological.
Oh yeah, I didn't attend that conference, but is there any way you could explain each of the methods?
Technological knowledge stands for understanding what digital tools are available to you and how to use those tools. Pedagogical knowledge consists of knowing what instructional strategies work best for your specific students and the content you teach. Content knowledge is your knowledge on the subject you are teaching. If you know these knowledges when planning a lesson, you are going to effectively use technology to teach.
Okay, is there anything else that I missed?
Now, the method I use is the SAMR. SAMR is different ways of integrating technology in the classroom. The acronym stands for substitution (same activity just with a digital tool but doesn't add to the learning process), augmentation (same as substitution just that it adds to the learning process), modification (uses interactive and dynamic activities), and redefinition (creates new task or activities). Substition and augmentation are enhancements, and modification and redefinition are transformations.
Oh! There's one more method, which honestly can be incorporated into the other ones. It's called the 4 C's.
Okay, thank you! I now know how to make my lessons and help my students be 21st century learners. I think out of all of the methods, the one I hope to use is the TPACK method all while making sure the 4 C's get included.
The 4 C's stands for critical thinking, creativity, collaboration, and communication. These 4 C's are essential skills that our students need. Students need to be able to solve problems, work with other people, and use their words effectively. With the help of SAMR and TPACK, we can enhance these skills. Well, I think that's it!
I think I will use this method because it gives me a broader look at what should be thought out before planning a lesson. It helps me think about how exactly it's benefiting my students and lets me see if I need to review my content before teaching it.
Now that I have learned and identified my way of integrating technology into my classroom, I am so ready to start my lessons. I can't wait to show my students a fun and interactive way of learning!
Sounds great! As long as it benefits our students and encourages them to be part of the 21st century learners!
