il petrolio naturale è un liquido oleoso che si trova sotto terra ma anche nella roccia. la roccia madre non è impermeabile ed è una trappola petrolifera. Inoltre il petrolio attualmente è la risorsa energetica + importante al mondo. Il petrolo è formata da una miscela di idrocarburi: che sono composti da idrogeno.

L'oleodotto è un mezzo per il trasporto del petrolio. Che comprende tubazioni in acciaio, stazioni di spinta, impianti per ricevere, l' immagazzinazione e infine la consegna.
