• È una tabella che classifica gli elementi chimici secondo alcune proprietà; fu messa a punto dal chimico russo D. Mendeleev
• È divisa in righe (periodi) e colonne (gruppi)

Come vengono classificati gli elementi chimici?

• Metalli (cedono con facilità elettroni)
• Non metalli (acquistano con facilità elettroni)
• Semimetalli (hanno proprietà intermedie tra metalli e non metalli)
• Gas nobili (non partecipano a reazioni chimiche; sono molto stabili)
• Elementi artificiali (sono stati creati in laboratorio e sono molto instabili)

Quasi tutti gli atomi sono stabili se hanno 8 elettroni sull’orbitale più esterno («ottetto») Tendono a questo risultato in tre modi: • cedendo elettroni • acquistando elettroni • condividendo elettroni
