In natura ne esistono 92 tipi differenti
È elettricamente neutro
È formata da:
• un nucleo contenente protoni (elettricamente positivi) e neutroni (elettricamente neutri)
• elettroni (elettricamente negativi) che si muovono attorno al nucleo
Può unirsi con altri atomi per formare molecole

- Il numero atomico, ossia il numero di protoni (e quindi di elettroni) che contiene

LA TAVOLA PERIODICA
- È una tabella che classifica gli elementi chimici secondo alcune proprietà; fu messa a punto dal chimico russo D. Mendeleev
- È divisa in righe (periodi) e colonne (gruppi)
Come vengono classificati gli elementi chimici?
- Metalli (cedono con facilità elettroni)
- Non metalli (acquistano con facilità elettroni)
- Semimetalli (hanno proprietà intermedie tra metalli e non metalli)
- Gas nobili (non partecipano a reazioni chimiche; sono molto stabili)
- Elementi artificiali (sono stati creati in laboratorio e sono molto instabili)

Quasi tutti gli atomi sono stabili se hanno 8 elettroni sull’orbitale più esterno («ottetto»)

• condividendo elettroni
