lathe machine safety:

hazards, risks and controls of (Labor mod.180)

Hazard: any source of potencial harm, damage, adverse effects to people, property or environment. Risk: probability that a hazard will cause harm or injury. Represents the potential consequences of exposure to a hazard Controls: measures put in place to reduce or eliminate the risk of harm associated with the hazard.

objects can fall onto the spinning chuck and be ejected at the operator.

Control:
  • do not place items on headstock.
  • ensure there are no objects on the headstock.
Risk:
Hazard:

unsecured tools and objects placed on the headstock.

unsecured objects can become projectiles when the lathe is started, possibly striking the operator.

Control:
  • ensure nothing is on the carrige
  • ensure the tool is secured on toolpost.
  • use the protection screen.
Risk:
Hazard:

tools and objects unsecured on carrige and tool post.

unproceted cleaning of lathe from chips can result in laceration.

Control:
  • ensure protection gloves are used.
  • use broom and dustpan while cleaning.
Risk:
Hazard:

metal shavings and chips

operator can be entangled on the surface of the spindle / workpiece / lead screw / other exposed rotating parts.

Control:
  • use protection screen over the spindle.
  • always keep eye on the spindle while rotating.
  • wear appropriate work overalls with elastics on the wrists and ankles and no catch points.
  • don’t wear loose equipment, cuffed or rolled sleeves, jewelry.
  • ensure long hair is tied back
  • don’t remove safety devices.
Risk:
Hazard:

spindle in rotation / workpiece fixed in the spindle in rotation / lead screw in rotation / exposed rotating parts.

workpiece can bend or break and hit nearby operator or equipment.

Control:
  • use workpieces of minimum length
  • use tailstock to fix the piece.
Risk:
Hazard:

long workpiece in rotation.

chuck key can fly away and eventually hit the operator or damage the machine.

Control:
  • ensure the chuck key is not in the chuck
  • use spring chuck key or self-ejecting chuck key.
Risk:
Hazard:

chuck key left in chuck.

chips shaved off the workpiece might be hot because of the friction between a tool and a workpiece and hit the operator causing skin burns or hitting eyes of the operator causing blindness.

Control:
  • use the safety screen
  • wear protection gloves
  • wear long sleeve protection equipment
  • wear protection glasses
  • use cooling liquid
Risk:
Hazard:

hot chips.

liquid or oil may be ejected by the machine and hit operator’s eyes causing harm or blindness.

Control:
  • wear protection glasses.
  • use protection screen over the spindle.
Risk:
Hazard:

cooling liquid / lubricating oil.

the operator may be electrocuted if touches exposed wires, wet electrical components and switches / electrocuted if touches electrical components with wet hands.

Control:
  • ensure your hands are dry while using the machine.
  • ensure all electrical components and switches are dry before turning the current on.
  • some electrical parts can not be touched if not authorized.
  • carry out maintenance operations only with the power off.
Risk:
Hazard:

exposed wires / electrical switches / electrical components.

heavy workpiece can fall and break or harm operator’s feet or legs / damage other equipment.

Control:

Wear steel-capped safety shoes.

Risk:
Hazard:

heavy workpiece.
