What is whistleblowing?
Whistleblowing is when a colleague, contractor or third-party partner raises or reports on organisational wrong-doing in the publics interest.
What can I blow the whistle on?
There are 6 categories whistleblowing should fall into
Criminal offencesCompromised health and safety Environmental Damage A (potential) miscarriage of justice Breaking the law Covering up wrongdoing
Protecting Whistleblowers
People who blow the whistle on wrong-doing are protected by law as long as the reporting is in the publics interest. Research suggests that main barriers to reporting are fear of reprisal, the feeling that nothing will happen or not knowing how to report.
How to report and to who
Your first port of call is your line manager who can then share the information with relevant colleagues. If you don't feel comfortable speaking to them, Exec and Directors are on hand to listen and support. Reports can be made anonomously but this may hinder the investigation due to not being able to explore further.
