We are travelling to South Dakota. Can you spot it on the map?
Let's have a closer look at the geographical situation of this state. Are there big plains? Massive mountains? Large rivers? Can you guess? What do you imagine?
South Dakota is a landlocked state in the North central region of the United States. It is also part of the Great Plains. South Dakota is named after the Dakota Sioux tribe.

Thomas JEFFERSON was the third President of the USA.He was a founding Father and was the principal author of the Declaration of Independence.He was born in 1743 and he died in 1826.

Theodore ROOSEVELT was the 26th President of the USA. He represents conservation and the industrial blossoming of the nation. He was born in 1858 and he died in 1919.

Abraham LINCOLN was the 16th President of the USA.He represents perseverance and abolished slavery.He was born in 1800 and he was assassinated in 1865.
Each head measures 60 feet high ( about 18 m).
It cost about 1 million dollars to complete.
The carving was the idea of Doane ROBINSON, a historian for the state of South Dakota. He originally wanted the sculpture to feature American West heroes, such as Lewis and Clark, their expedition guide Sacagawea, Oglala Lakota chief Red Cloud, Buffalo Bill Cody, and Oglala Lakota chief Crazy Horse.
Each year, 2 million visitors go to this National Monument. It created jobs and tourism in a state where economy needed to be reinforced.
400 workers mined to create the sculpture. They used scaffoldings, drills and chisels. It was very dangerous.
Gutzon BORGLUM, a Danish-American sculptor was in charge of the creation of this National monument.
It took 14 years to complete. It started in 1927. Washington's head was finished in 1934. Jefferson's head was finished in 1936. Roosevelt's head was finished in 1937. Lincoln's head was finished in 1939.
