Since our last session on Student Talk vs. Teacher Talk, please take a moment to write down some strategies you have used on your index card to create a learning environment focused on student talk. You will have three minutes to complete this task.

Quality teacher talk is essential for explaining concepts. Student talk helps them own the knowledge. It's a balance; teachers must hear students to assess understanding.

Consider the strategies you use in your classroom to engage students in academic discussions.

Strategies for 1:1 Teachers

Build rapport: Get to know your students on a personal level to foster a positive learning environment.

Open-ended questions: Ask questions that require more than a simple yes/no answer, prompting deeper thought and discussion.

Check-in questions: Start sessions with a brief check-in to understand student's current thoughts and feelings on the content, creating a more personal connection.

Anticipation guide: Give students a handout with statements related to the lesson topic and ask them to mark whether they agree or disagree before learning the new information. (Helps to activate prior knowledge, introduce vocabulary, and build curiosity)

Prompting: Use prompts like "Can you explain more about that?" or "What do you think about..." to encourage elaboration. (Question Stems)
