Food gives our body energy, like putting petrol in a car. Food also provides us with all the nutrients and minerals that our body needs to maintain itself.Calories, the short name for kilocalories (Kcal), are the unit that we use to measure the amount of energy certain foods give us.

The recommended daily calorie intake for men, women, and children are the guidelines that the NHS encourages us to follow, as a way of keeping healthy. We all need a different amount of energy depending on our age, gender and how active we are. Remember that these recommendations are a rough guide as everyone is different! For example, if you are very active every day, you will need more calories than recommended so that you have enough energy to do your activities.
