The First Steps of the Net
- 1958: During the Cold War, the US Department of Defence established a research centre, ARPA (Advanced Research Project Agency), to set up a telecommunications network that could guarantee the circulation of information even in the event of war.
- 1969: ARPANET is created, a telematic network linking US research centres and universities
- 1973: Robert Kahn and Vinton Cerf, two US computer experts, invent the TCP/IP computer protocol that allows communication between any type of computer and has allowed the Internet to develop worldwide

The Internet is born
1982: The term INTERNET (from Interconnected Networks) is coined for the first time to refer to the many networks that were created on the Arpanet, which in 1983 ceased to be a network for military purposes and was put at the service of universities and research centres.

- In 1989, Tim Berners-Lee, an English physicist and computer scientist, created a new language, the HTML (Hyper Text Markup Language), which allows all electronic documents to be linked together through text or images (called “links”), effectively inventing the World Wide Web, which was made public in 1991.
- This was the birth of the Web, which allowed everyone to use the Net and determined the success and spread of the Internet.

And in Italy?
- 30 April 1986: this was the day Italy connected to the Internet for the first time. This first connection was made by researchers at the CNUCE-CNR institute in Pisa
- 23 December 1987: cnr.it, the first domain of the Italian internet network, is born
- Today there are more than 3 million .it domain names
