Ali não havia eletricidade. Por isso foi à luz de uma vela mortiça Que li, inserto na cama, O que estava à mão para ler - A Bíblia, em português, porque (coisa curiosa!), eram protestantes. E reli a Primeira Epístola aos Coríntios. Em torno de mim o sossego excessivo das noites de província Fazia um grande barulho ao contrário, Dava-me uma tendência do choro para a desolação. A Primeira Epístola aos Coríntios... Relia-a à luz de uma vela subitamente antiquíssima, E um grande mar de emoção ouvia-se dentro de mim... Sou nada... Sou uma ficção... Que ando eu a querer de mim ou de tudo neste mundo? "Se eu não tivesse a caridade”… E a soberana voz manda, do alto dos séculos, A grande mensagem em que a alma é livre... "Se eu não tivesse a caridade"... Meu Deus, e eu que não tenho a caridade!...

Na primeira parte do poema podemos verificar que é uma noite bastante sossegada e silenciosa o que faz com que o poeta se sinta triste, e nessa noite, deitado na sua cama, decidiu ler o que estava à mão (a Bíblia) à luz de uma vela mortiça pois não havia eletricidade. Na segunda parte o poeta mais uma vez mostra o quanto está triste e diz não ser nada, ser apenas ficção mostrando também que não sabe o que esperar dele próprio nem de tudo o que o rodeia neste mundo.

Análise do poema

O poema evoca uma atmosfera de solidão e reflexão. A falta de eletricidade simboliza um afastamento do mundo moderno e uma conexão com o passado. A leitura da "Primeira Epístola aos Coríntios" sugere uma busca por significado e espiritualidade, contrastando com a sensação de desolação.
