Objective 2: Analyze how the geosphere is shaped by plate tectonics and the rock cycle

Standard 2.1 Use models to explain how mantle convection powers plate tectonics.

Clarification Statement: Earth’s layers include the surface crust, mantle, inner, and outer cores. The layers differ in density and temperature. Motions of the mantle depend on the density of materials due to energy. The energy of the internal earth is caused by radioactive decay of unstable isotopes. The geosphere includes the solid part of the earth consisting of rocks, minerals and landforms.. Mantle convection creates currents within the earth’s mantle that cause the plates to move apart at divergent boundaries, together at convergent boundaries, and slide past each other at transform boundaries leading to certain geological features. The process of convection happens due to temperature difference and density changes.

Earth's Structure Modeling

DUE: 10/29/2024

TEACH

Choose one of the products below to "teach" others about the structure of the Earth.

TEACH: (CHOOSE 1 )

OPTION 1: Infographic
OPTION 2: Podcast
OPTION 3: Model

Option 1: Create an Infographic

  • An infographic is much like a digital poster. An infographic contains graphics (images, graphs, tables, charts)that contribute to the understanding of the content's topics. An infographic also contains text that both describes the graphics and provides additional details pertaining to the topic being presented.
  • WATCH: "How to Create an Infographic" (Click on the eyeball to view)
    • Choose one of the 4 platform links and instructions for selecting an infographic technology tools (free sign up) inlcude:
    • Earth's Structure Infographic should include the relationships among Earth's composition, density, temperature and pressure variations.
    • Submit the link to your work on Canvas. Before submitting your infographic, WATCH the video (Click on the eyeball to view) for your chosen tool to ensure you submit your link correctly.

Option 2: Host/Guest on a Podcast

  • Some of you may have chosen a podcast as a product, if so you have a good idea of what a podcast is if you don't already; A podcast is a radio program that is stored in a digital form that you can download from the internet and play on a computer. A radio program typically consists of:
    • a host or multiple hosts -leading the discussion, asking questions and follow up questions.
    • a guest (sometimes multiple guest) that are experts in their field (music, science, education, etc. ) - responding to questions and providing more in depth discussion.
  • THIS ASSIGNMENT REQUIRES AT LEAST 2 STUDENTS, MAXIMUM OF 4.
  • CHOOSE: A platform for your podcast. Consder one similiar to the following:
ANCHOR FM free, built in recording and editing capabilities. It’s not super advanced by any means, but it does the basics and that’s really all that is needed. Anchor also has the option to add in sound effects and other audio tracks, which was a huge bonus. (CLICK ON ICON)CHROMEBOOK SCREEN RECORD-Free and built into your Chromebook. Select Icon to see instuctions for use. Canva Podcast - free, click on image for link. INCLUDE: Your podcast should include discussion and expertise of Earth's Structure including the relationships among Earth's composition, density, temperature and pressure variations.
  • Helpful Hint: Determine the questions that will be asked in advance and Practice the interview multiple times before attempting to record.
TALKING POINTS EXAMPLE

Record your screen Press Shift + Ctrl + Show windows . In the menu at the bottom, select Screen record . Select an option: Record the full screen . Record a partial screen . Record a window . At the bottom, select Settings . To record a video with your camera on, turn on Front Camera. To record a video with audio, you can select: Device audio and microphone To show key combos, mouse clicks, and touch gestures when you record, turn on Show keys and clicks. Select Settings and then Select folder. Recordings or screenshots you take are added to the folder you select. To start recording: To record full screen: Click anywhere on your screen. To record partial screen: Select a part of the screen to be recorded. From the drop down, you can select: Record video: File format is .webm. Record GIF: File format is .gif. To record window: Select a window to record. To stop recording, at the bottom right, select Stop recording . To stop recording, you can also use the keyboard shortcut Search + Shift + X.

Option 3: Earth's Structure Model

Scientific models can take many forms, including physical models, diagrams, computer-based models, mathematical models, and conceptual models. You will create a physical model of the Earth's Structure. You may use any medium you would like to depict the structure, features and characteristics of the layers of the atmosphere.
  • Examples:
    • dioramas
    • mobiles
    • any 2D or 3D construction
  • This assignment may include up to 2 students.
  • Include:
    • Instructions and Legend for your model criteria that include composition, density, temperature and pressure changes for each layer.
    • Summary of relationships. (Think Science Fair Board and Model)
  • You may use any classroom materials that I may have, however you most likely will need to gather materials from home to construct your 2-D or 3-D model.
  • You will submit your work to the teacher for scoring
