Meet the Rarámuri people.

The Sierra Tarahumara, located in northern Mexico's Chihuahua state, is part of the Sierra Madre Occidental mountain range. This remote, rugged region is home to Copper Canyon (Barranca del Cobre), a network of six interconnected canyons larger and deeper than the Grand Canyon. Carved by rivers like the Rio Urique and Rio Batopilas, the area features towering cliffs, deep valleys, and impressive rock formations.A biodiversity hotspot, the Sierra Tarahumara's temperate forests are filled with pines, oaks, willows, and sycamores, while its wildlife includes black bears, cougars, and the Mexican gray wolf. Bird species like the thick-billed parrot and military macaw also thrive here. The region’s rivers shape dramatic landscapes and feed into waterfalls like Basaseachic Falls, one of Mexico’s tallest. This is Isidro Baldenegro, who grew up in the Sierra Tarahumara, where his father taught him the sacredness of the land. Like many Rarámuri, he saw the natural world as part of a spiritual ecosystem, with every tree, river, and mountain holding deep meaning.
