Meet the Rarámuri people.

The Sierra Tarahumara, located in northern Mexico's Chihuahua state, is part of the Sierra Madre Occidental mountain range. This remote, rugged region is home to Copper Canyon (Barranca del Cobre), a network of six interconnected canyons larger and deeper than the Grand Canyon. Carved by rivers like the Rio Urique and Rio Batopilas, the area features towering cliffs, deep valleys, and impressive rock formations.A biodiversity hotspot, the Sierra Tarahumara's temperate forests are filled with pines, oaks, willows, and sycamores, while its wildlife includes black bears, cougars, and the Mexican gray wolf. Bird species like the thick-billed parrot and military macaw also thrive here. The region’s rivers shape dramatic landscapes and feed into waterfalls like Basaseachic Falls, one of Mexico’s tallest. These waters are vital to the Rarámuri people and sustain the area’s diverse ecosystems.

Meet the Rarámuri people.

These are the Rarámuri people, whose way of life is deeply rooted in a spiritual bond with the land. To them, the Sierra Tarahumara is more than a home—it is sacred. Every mountain, river, and tree is seen as alive and intertwined with their existence. They live sustainably, farming maize, beans, and squash, and gathering from the forests, always mindful of maintaining the earth's balance. Their spiritual connection to the land is central to their rituals and traditions, with the belief that honoring the earth’s spirit through ceremonies and daily practices will ensure its protection for future generations. Their long-distance running, a hallmark of their culture, is not just a means of travel but also a spiritual act, symbolizing their endurance and unity with the natural world.

Meet Isidro Baldengro.

This is Isidro Baldenegro, who grew up in the Sierra Tarahumara, where his father taught him the sacredness of the land. Like many Rarámuri, he saw the natural world as part of a spiritual ecosystem, with every tree, river, and mountain holding deep meaning. From a young age, he learned to live in harmony with nature, and his connection to the land became central to his identity and purpose.

However, the growing threat of illegal logging began to devastate the forests that were vital to the Rarámuri way of life. These forests, which provided food, shelter, and spiritual sustenance, were being stripped away by outsiders driven by profit. Isidro’s father, a passionate environmental activist, took it upon himself to lead the fight to protect the land. From a young age, Isidro watched his father organize protests and resist the destruction of their sacred forests. Tragically, his father was assassinated for his efforts, a profound loss that left a lasting impact on Isidro, fueling his determination to continue the fight.

Isidro continued his father’s legacy with unwavering dedication. As he grew older, he took up the mantle of leadership, determined to protect the forests that were central to the Rarámuri's spiritual and physical survival. Isidro began organizing peaceful resistance, gathering fellow Rarámuri and other local communities to protest the illegal logging that was ravaging their land. He understood the power of unity and worked tirelessly to rally his people, educating them about their rights and the importance of defending the environment. In addition to protests, Isidro turned to legal channels, using his knowledge of Mexican environmental laws and indigenous rights to challenge the loggers and the corrupt officials who allowed the destruction to continue. He worked with human rights organizations and environmental groups to bring attention to the plight of the Sierra Tarahumara, framing the logging not just as environmental exploitation but as a violation of indigenous sovereignty. His efforts, rooted in non-violence and deep respect for the land, became a symbol of peaceful resistance, as hesought to protect the sacred forests for future generations.

Importance of storytelling

For the Rarámuri people, storytelling has long been a way of passing down knowledge, cultural practices, and their spiritual connection to the earth. Isidro Baldenegro tapped into this tradition to inspire his community. He framed the fight for the Sierra Tarahumara not just as a legal or environmental battle, but as part of a larger cultural story about protecting their ancestral lands. Through storytelling, Isidro was able to communicate the spiritual significance of the forests to both the Rarámuri people and the wider world. The forests were not just resources—they were sacred spaces that held the identity, history, and future of his people. His ability to communicate this profound connection made his advocacy resonate beyond environmental circles, reaching those who understood the importance of cultural preservation.

Means of Communication

As a leader, Isidro frequently relied on oral communication to mobilize the Rarámuri community. He gathered people for meetings, where he would speak not only of the environmental degradation but also about their collective identity and shared history. His speeches were more than informational—they were motivational, reminding his people that they had a responsibility to protect the land their ancestors had nurtured for centuries.Community Radio: To broaden the reach of his message, Isidro and other activists used community radio stations to spread awareness of the logging crisis. Radio became an essential medium to educate locals about their rights, the environmental laws that could protect them, and the risks posed by illegal logging.

Powerful forces backed the illegal logging—local elites and criminal organizations—making the fight incredibly dangerous. Isidro was constantly under threat, with his life hanging in the balance. He faced relentless harassment and intimidation, intended to silence him. Despite the mounting risks and the growing danger from those determined to stop him, Isidro never wavered. His determination to protect the land remained steadfast, even as the forces against him became more ruthless.

In 2005, Isidro Baldenegro received the Goldman Environmental Prize, gaining international recognition for his courageous fight to protect the Sierra Tarahumara. The award brought global attention to the environmental destruction in the region and the dangers faced by indigenous defenders in Mexico. After the recognition, Isidro forged alliances with human rights and environmental organizations, turning the Rarámuri people's local struggle into a global cause. He used legal avenues to challenge illegal logging and pressured the government to enforce environmental laws, leading to temporary halts in logging operations.Through peaceful resistance, Isidro’s leadership helped preserve parts of the Sierra Tarahumara and inspired indigenous and environmental movements worldwide. Despite constant threats, he remained a symbol of resilience, continuing his father's legacy and leaving behind a lasting example of environmental justice.

In 2017, Isidro Baldenegro was tragically assassinated, a brutal reminder of the escalating violence against environmental defenders in Mexico. His murder was not an isolated event but part of a broader and terrifying pattern—Mexico had become one of the most dangerous countries in the world for those who dared to protect the land. Powerful elites, criminal organizations, and corrupt officials regularly silenced those who stood in the way of their exploitation of natural resources.Isidro’s death sent shockwaves through the global environmental and human rights communities, becoming a symbol of the grave dangers faced by indigenous leaders and activists. His assassination underscored the immense risks taken by those fighting to protect the earth and defend their communities.
