PLOT

The Tempest

“The Tempest” tells the story of Prospero, the rightful Duke of Milan, who has been exiled to a remote island with his daughter, Miranda. Years earlier, Prospero’s brother Antonio usurped his title with the help of King Alonso of Naples, leading to their banishment. On the island, Prospero has harnessed magical powers, aided by the spirit Ariel and the savage creature Caliban, who was born on the island. When a ship carrying Alonso, Antonio, and others passes by, Prospero conjures a violent storm to shipwreck them on the island. As the survivors explore the island, they encounter various trials. Ferdinand, Alonso’s son, meets Miranda, and they fall in love. Meanwhile, Caliban plots to regain control of the island with the help of two drunken shipwrecked sailors. Prospero ultimately reveals his identity to the shipwrecked nobles and forgives them for their past wrongs. He reconciles with Alonso and Antonio, freeing Ariel from servitude and planning to return to Milan with Miranda and Ferdinand. The play concludes with themes of forgiveness, redemption, and the renunciation of magic, as Prospero prepares to reclaim his dukedom and leave the island behind.
