Research Question: "How does small group instruction impact my 5th grade students’ abilities to identify the main idea and supporting details in an informational text?”

Research Product: The research product for my action research capstone is an instructional intervention group that is implemented with children.

Topic: using small group instruction to teach finding the main idea and supporting details of an informational text.

Problem: Some of my fifth grade students scored basic or below basic in the area of identifying the main idea and supporting details of an informational text on the state standardized assessment.

Action Research: Study of an Instructional Intervention

Research Product: The product of this research will be a professional development program. This professional development program directly addresses the lack of formative assessment practices in high school biology classrooms. By providing teachers with actionable strategies and tools, the program aims to increase the frequency and quality of formative assessments, which will positively impact student achievement in biology.

Research Question: How does participation in a professional development program on formative assessments influence high school biology teachers’ use of formative assessments in their instruction?

Problem Statement: The problem is that high school biology teachers are not consistently using formative assessments to guide their instruction, leading to suboptimal student understanding of key scientific concepts. The cause of this problem is the lack of targeted professional development that helps teachers learn how to integrate formative assessments into their classrooms.

Applied Research project focused on the creation of a professional development program
