• Tom Vilsack is the current secretary of Agriculture, he is the 30th person who has run this role.

A brief explanation of why the department was created and what were some of the issues the United States government was facing that required the department to be created.

• The department of Agriculture was created to provide leadership on food, agriculture, natural resources and rural development.
• The main issue the United States was facing at the time that led to the creation of this department was the size of the United States.
• There was a prior office to the department of agriculture but it was too small to run everything.

What are the primary responsibilities of your department? What issues are they supposed to tackle or solve?

The primary function department of Agriculture is to provide leadership on issues regarding food, nutrition, agriculture, natural resources, rural development, and related issues

Nutrition center(FNS) Produces food security and reduces hunger by providing children and low-income people access to food, and nutrition education. The Foreign Agricultural Service(FAS) This agency is in charge of managing foreign market access for U.S. products, and improving the competitive position of U.S. agriculture in the global market.

• In 2023, the US Department of Agriculture approved lab-grown chicken from GOOD Meat and Upside food for sale in the US
• Has already been banned in several states, like Florida and Alabama
• USDA was questioned and put through scrutiny by certain individuals
• Some argue that the process for growing the meat, will only worsen climate change

• In April of 2024, Angie and Wenceslaus “June” Provost Jr. filled an amended complaint against USDA.
• Later joined by the ACLU of Louisiana
• Complaint alleged discriminatory practices against black and minority farmers.
• For as long as USDA has been operating, discrimination against minority farmers has always been present.
• Denying them loans and the access to other programs up to present times.

I believe that the Department of Agriculture does its job properly and sufficiently, their work was absolutely vital for our country’s development and still continues driving the country forward , but I also believe that the department’s historic and current mistreatment of minority farmers should also be taken into account.
