What was the main purpose of Ellis Island?
A long time ago, settlers came to America looking for new places to live. Here’s how they established cities in three important areas:
The settlers arrived by ship and found a beautiful harbor. They decided to build a city there because it was a great place for trade. They created roads and buildings, and soon, many people came to live and work in New York City.
Chicago started as a small settlement by a river. Settlers noticed that it was a good spot for transporting goods by boat and later by train. They built homes and stores, and it grew quickly into a big city where people could find jobs and trade.
Detroit was founded near the Great Lakes. The settlers built it as a fort to protect themselves and to help with trade. They planted crops and raised animals, and as more people moved there, Detroit became a bustling city known for its factories and cars.
These cities grew because settlers found good locations for trading, farming, and living. They worked hard to build homes and communities that we still know today!
As a team decide, which city you want to draw to show what life was like for settlers. Your drawing should show information that we just discussed. Your team will get points for working together, drawing, information shown and following directions
