What is printmaking?
What made printmaking popular?
Types of Printmaking
Lithography
Intaglio
Relief Printing
Silk Screen Printing
Stencil Printing
back to 3.7
WOODCUT
relief printing
- The oldest type of print is a relief print.
- In relief printing, you carve away any spaces that you want to be white.
- The ink will stick only to the raised area, which you apply to your paper, fabric, or other surface.
- The inked areas will transfer ink (color or black) as a negative image to your surface.
- The un-inked lines are white, not black.
back to 3.7
(in-TAL-ee-oh)
Intaglio
Intaglio is more like drawing. You brush ink into the carved lines, wipe off the surface of the plate, and then use high pressure to press the paper (or other material) to the surface of the plate.
back to 3.7
(Plane-O-gra-FEE)
Types of Planography:
- Lithography
- Digital Printing
Planography is printmaking in which the surface is not changed.
Planography
back to 3.7
(luh- thaa-gruh-fee)
Lithography
The most well-known artistic form of planographic printing is lithography. Lithography is very different from intaglio or relief printing. In lithography, you use chemicals to determine what is and is not printed. The basic principle is that grease, or oil, and water do not like to mix.
back to 3.7
stencil printing
Stencil printing requires the use of a screen. Ink passes through the screen and transfers onto the material. Like relief printing, you have to think in reverse. A stencil is a negative image. The holes in the stencil will transfer ink. The surface of the stencil will be white.
back to 3.7
silk screen printing
Silk Screen printing is a type of stencil printing that is used primarily on fabrics. However, it can be used for paper too! This type of printing uses a silk fabric to create the stencils and the printer pushes the ink through the silk as demonstrated on in the video here.
Printmaking's Unique History
Artists can reach a wider audience than by selling a painting or drawing an image.
why create art through printmaking?
A skilled printer will make each print look very similar, but there will always be small differences that make each print unique.
The biggest advantage of printmaking is that more than one person can have an original version of the finished product.

Which printmaking technique doesn't require any carving, but needs a special pencil to draw on the matrix with?
IntalgioRelief PrintingStencilWoodblock
Which type of printmaking is being shown here?
Collagraphy
Collagraphy is a printmaking technique that uses found materials to create the matrix. You can think of this as the printmaking version of collage.
Unit 3 Project
We will be making our own matrix using found materials.
4. Arrange the materials to create unique shapes and patterns
3. Contrast - putting objects that look different next to each other
2. Shapes
1. Texture - variety if possible
Art elements to keep in mind
You are making an abstract design - it's ok if it doesn't look like anything specific
4.
- To ways to go about gluing your objects: 1. lay out all of your items on the cardboard first so you can decide where you want everything placed and then glue everything downOR2. glue down your objects as you go
- You don't want to use objects that are just going to absorb the paint (like a paper towel)
Keep in mind.....
YOU DON'T NEED ALL THESE ITEMS TRY TO FIND AT LEAST THREE (3)
Make sure these objects are NOT ones you'll need to use again
Crafts:
- pipe cleaner
- felt
- sequins
- small beads
- string
- yarn
- fabric
- buttons
Office:
- paper clips
- rubber band
- small eraser
- construction paper
- cardboard
Kitchen:
- dried rice
- dried pasta (nothing to big, thin like spaghetti)
- tin foil
- plastic wrap
- plastic grocery bag
- cupcake liner
SUGGESTED Found objects:
- Cardboard (4 inches by 7 inches or as close to that size as possible)
- Scissors
- Liquid Glue
- Large paintbrush

- Johannes Gutenberg made relief printing on a large scale possible when he invented the printing press in 1440.
- These add more precision to the pressure applied to the print as well.
- Printing presses also made the process a lot faster for production.
