A literary genre is a category that authors use to describe the primary content and tone of their writing. The genre an author chooses can help them determine what type of plot, characters, and setting to create. Literary genres typically describe writing styles such as poetry, essays, novels, short stories, and plays.

This week we will be reading a short horror story! (Don't worry, it's not too scary.) But we have to ask ourselves... what makes horror scary????
The Horror Genre
Your Turn!
Of course! You need fear and dread. You are afraid for the character and dread what will happen to them. But how do authors create fear and dread in a book? There are no jump scares after all...
Fear and Dread
Key Elements of Horror
Authors create fear and dread in horror with literary elements!!! (Not what you were expecting, right.) Specifically with: ~mood ~tone ~tension ~pacing ~foreshadowing
Fear and Dread
Key Elements of Horror
mood - refers to the emotions that a text evokes from the reader tone - the attitude of the author towards the subject matter, which is conveyed through the narrator's word choice, writing style, and emotional expression tension- the feeling of suspense, uncertainty, or anticipation created by conflicting forces within a literary work pacing- the speed at which a story is told foreshadowing - a narrative device in which a storyteller gives an advance hint of what is to come later in the story

TENSION is what keeps you on the edge of your seat and gives you that feeling of dread in the pit of your stomach. Tension is when you know something bad is going to happen, you don't know what... but you just know. It's what makes you cover your eyes with the blankets and pick your feet up off the floor so the monsters don't get them.
Tension
One of the ways authors create TENSION is with the TONE and MOOD. The setting of the story can have a dark and dreary mood and the author's tone can be mysterious or deadly serious.

Another way to create TENSION is with PACING, or the speed at which the story is told. The author can choose to slow the story down in the scary parts, like when the masked man is walking up behind the hero. Slowly getting closer...step by agonizing step. Or he can speed things up as the masked man suddenly bursts into a run behind our hero and jumps at him, tackling him to the ground!
Creating Tension
Another way to create TENSION is with FORESHADOWING. Remember, foreshadowing is when the author gives us hints at what's coming in the story. So if the author writes, "As she left the house, a chill ran down her spine, leaving an ominous feeling that something bad was about to happen” we KNOW the author is giving us a clue and something bad is going to happen...which creates tension. This also adds to the mood.
