According to ThoughtCo, cogates are "words that are related to the origin of another word," another way to explain this is by saying that they are usually words that look like or sound like other words in other languages. Usually this origin is Latin or Greek but it does not always mean that the language has to be considered a romance language in order for it to be considered a cognate.

Now you may ask yourself what is that importance of this and why are we learning it?

There are several reasons as to why it is important but specifically for this class, learning cognates can easily level up your overall understanding of the English language and can make learning new material easier. The best comparision I have is that it similar to when you go to a social event and you know no one there, but about 10 minutes later an acquaintance appears in and you immediately navigate yourself to their side. You are more comfortable with that person in a strange place. Learning and using cognates can provide a similar support

You will be getting a song, each song has some cognates that you will identify and write what they mean, using the English words you already know + the cognates, you will give a brief description that will state what the song is about. The first 10-15 minutes you will work QUIETLY with you group, after this you can look up the song and listen to it.You will work in groups of three (no you can't chose with who you will work with).
