HOW CAN TRAVELLERS AND INDIVIDUALS HELP ?
In recent years, overtourism in Italy has grown exponentially, especially in the most popular tourist destinations and appreciated by visitors from all over the world. Unfortunately, overcrowding has negative effects not only on the environment but also on the artistic and cultural heritage, putting at risk both the experience of tourists and the quality of life of residents. Overtourism is now a problem particularly felt in places such as Venice, Siena or the Cinque Terre, where mass tourism has for many years had a direct impact on the conservation of historical and natural heritage, but also in small towns, whose beauties have suddenly become very popular. For some years, the effects of mass tourism have become increasingly felt and have caused:- Damage to cultural heritage: Monuments such as the Colosseum or the Tower of Pisa suffer from accelerated wear and tear due to the huge number of tourists making it difficult to maintain the oldest structures intact. - Environmental degradation: Extraordinary locations, such as the beaches of Sardinia or the mountains of the Dolomites in Trentino, are at risk not only of erosion but also of air, water and soil pollution, Due to the presence of people and the continuous passage of means of transport. - Overcrowding: Art cities like Rome or Florence have long known a large tourist infestation that makes it difficult for residents to lead a normal life in their daily lives. - Economic impact: Excessive mass tourism can lead to higher prices of real estate and basic necessities, making life unaffordable for local residents. - Loss of local authenticity: Traditional activities and local shops are often replaced by commercial activities geared exclusively to tourists, depriving the destination of its unique character and limiting the exploitation of the originality of the place. The Italian Association of Responsible Tourism, AITR, has been a spokesperson for the difficulties of the most overcrowded tourist areas, trying to propose an innovative and responsible approach to address this problem.
