Holy moly! Unit 4 already? Time sure does fly when you’re having fun! Unit 4 is another one of my favorite units of the Art 8 course. In this unit, we will talk about mixed media and book art. Types of book art include: handmade books, Orihon’s, pop up books, illuminated manuscripts, tunnel books, and illustrated storybooks. We will focus on the art of tunnel books and we’ll make our very own tunnel book creations for the Unit 4 projects. How cool is that?! Read on to learn more about the exciting things that we’ll learn and do in Unit 4 of the course!

In Unit 4, we will focus on the book art of tunnel books.
WHAT’S A TUNNEL BOOK?
A tunnel book is viewed through an opening in the front cover. Tunnel books are made of layers, and every layer is viewed at once. See the example tunnel books to the left. We will make a more simplified version of a tunnel book for our very own Unit 4 projects!

Unit 4 - "Tunnel Book" Project Information
For this project, you will be asked to create your very own “Tunnel Book”. You will choose the subject matter that you wish to illustrate within your tunnel book. You will then use three pieces of paper, cut them out, and paste them together to form a unified creation. Each piece of paper represents the foreground (front), middle-ground, and background (back) of your tunnel book scene. When cut and pasted together, these layers will form your finished design. How cool?! Besides your “Tunnel Book” creation, you will also complete a “Critique Worksheet” to tell me more about your creation. (We will complete the worksheet together in guided instruction.) Check out some more info and examples for this project!
