HISTORY
The I.I.S. "De Sarlo-De Lorenzo" is a key educational institution in the Lagonegrese and Pollino areas, known for its strong cultural and scholastic tradition. Located in southwestern Basilicata, it also serves nearby regions in lower Campania and northern Calabria. The school actively collaborates with local institutions, municipalities, and organizations to foster civic awareness among students.Despite recent demographic declines, the school has expanded its educational offerings, particularly in STEM fields, to adapt to evolving economic and social needs. This includes innovative projects and seminars that emphasize the integration of scientific and humanistic disciplines, promoting critical thinking and applied skills.Challenges such as inadequate transportation have been addressed through online platforms established during remote learning, enabling continued engagement in afternoon activities. The school is committed to lifelong learning and supports students in making informed decisions about their future, including university pathways.Additionally, the Institute is focused on guiding students toward careers in sustainable development and innovative research, exemplified by initiatives like the PCTO project on the medical profession and a new biology curriculum with a biomedical focus. WHERE ARE WE?
The I.I.S. "De Sarlo - De Lorenzo" is located in a territory with great and undisputed potential as a crossroads of areas whose main economic activities are related to services (with particular regard to the social and health)services and craft enterprises. Equally relevant is the presence of professional associations and studies. However, the area in which the institute operates bears the consequences of depopulation and the progressive reduction of services to the person, as well as the lack of a solid business network.
THE SCHOOL POPULATION
The community of the I.I.S. "De Sarlo - De Lorenzo" is made up of students from all over the surrounding territory: the area of Lagonegrese and Pollino, the upper Calabria, the southern part of Campania (Vallo di Diano and Gulf of Policastro). Although the effects of the economic crisis are clearly visible, students and students mostly come from middle-class families. In any case, situations of extreme discomfort are circumscribed. At the same time, the presence of students of non-Italian citizenship is limited. The absence of real social hardship, linked to the inoccupation of both parents (even if the precarious and underemployment, as well as the substantial presence of single-income families, are still a problem to report) grants a relative tranquility to students, that can therefore face the formative distance without excessive uneasiness. The school also contained the impact of early school leaving as a result of the pandemic, the effects of which should be assessed in the medium and long term. Despite the demographic crisis that has been affecting the entire territory for years, our institute has regularly activated all the existing courses in the educational offer for the 2022/2023 school year. Meeting point between cultures and traditions of very long duration, our institute is proposed as a glue and propelling center of ideas functional to the cultural, human and professional formation of the person. Creating the conditions for everyone to interact with a fragile and too often forgotten territory, laying the foundations for dynamic growth in a context based on research and development, is the main challenge for the future of our school.
