The Chinese New Year is also known as the "Spring Festival"
The New Year marks the start of spring and the end of the coldest part of winter.Most believe it was established in the Shang Dynasty (1600-1046 BC).
China, Indonesia, The Philippines, Vietnam, South Korea, Malaysia, North Korea, Singapore, & Brunei have public holidays during the Chinese New Year.
The Chinese New Year date Changes each year.It falls between January 21 and February 20, determined by the Chinese lunar calendar. In 2025, it falls on Feb 10th.
There are 12 zodiac animals in the Chinese calendar. Each year starts a new animal.The animals in order are Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat, Monkey, Rooster, Dog, and Pig.2025 is the Snake.

Chinese people love the color red. Red represents postivivity, happiness, beauty, vitality, good luck, success, & good fortune. They send cards and letters to send good wishes and luck.
The world's largest annual migration happens during the festival. Family reunions have people traveling long distances (3.5 billion people journey in China).
Washing, sweeping & taking out garbage are not allowed!
Washing hair & clothes are not allowed on the first day of the lunar year because it is seen as "washing one's fortune away" at the beginning of the year. Sweeping and garbage symbolize removing good luck from the house.
