Agricultural landscapesin Spain

MOUNTAIN In this, forestry, extensive livestock farming and hunting are common. These occur in Andalusian and Castilian meadows, where there's extensive livestock farming.

ATLANTIC/OCEAN Atlantic or oceanic landscapes are found in the part of Spain that have an Atlantic climate. They are wet, green and mountainous with moderate temperatures. There's abundant rainfall all year round, that irrigation isn't necessary.

CONTINENTAL MEDITERRANEAN Are found at medium altitudes. Produce cereal crops, such as wheat, rye and oats, and practise ovinr livestock farming. Irrigation is mainly used along riverbanks where vegetables and con are grown. Farms are extensive.

DRY Such as those found in Almeria and parts of Murcia, there are semi-desert areas. Here, there are many small arable farms.

COASTAL MEDITERRANEAN Are found on the southern and eastern coasts, these areas have a Mediterranean climate with mild temperatures and little rainfall.

DRY VOLCANIC

SUBTROPICAL VOLCANIC The subtropical climate and soil quality favour commercial agriculture. However, the geographical location and the fsct that products have to be exported by air make agriculture expensive.

UNPRODUCTIVE LAND The land is incapable of producing agricultural or forest products due to poor soil or site characteristics, or the location of which renders it impractical to harvest agricultural or forest products.

TUNDRA REINDEER FARMING tundra reindeer herding has a focus on meat production. Taiga is geographically widespread. Animals are primarily used for transportation and milk production.

FOREST We define an Intact Forest Landscape as an unbroken expanse of natural ecosystems within the zone of current forest extent, showing no signs of human activity and large enough that all native biodiversity.

INTENSIVE DAIRY FARMING Dairy farming is a form of agriculture that is dedicated to the production of milk and dairy products from the care and feeding of cattle, mainly dairy cows.

POLYCULTURE AND LIVESTOCK FARMING Polyculture in agriculture is best defined as the practice of planting several kinds of crop species on the same piece of land and at the same time. This tries to imitate the diversity found in the natural ecosystems.

SPECIALISED ARABLE FARMING This make reference to the specializasion of cultivation of crops on land for food production, involving practices such as ploughing and growing various types of grains like wheat, barley, and einkorn.

SUBTROPICAL ARABLE FARMIN Sub-tropical crops are plants that can tolerate cooler temperatures than tropical crops. They are typically found in regions that experience some frost, but where temperatures do not drop below -5°C.

IRRIGATED ARABLE FARMING Irrigated agricultural area refers to area equipped to provide water to the crops. Arable farming refers to the cultivation of crops on land for food production.

CEREAL AGRICULTURE The growing of cereal crops for human food and livestock feed as well as for other uses, including industrial starch and biofuel. they are cultivated primarily for their starchy dry fruits.

EXTENSIVE LIVESTOCK FARMING Extensive livestock production is an animal farming system characterised by a low productivity per animal and per surface. It uses small amounts of inputs, capital, and labour compared to the farmed land area.

MEDITERRANEAN POLYCULTURE The Mediterranean polyculture that the Minoans pioneered was the cultivation of olives, grapes, and grains in a single, interrelated agricultural system.

Agricultural landscapes around the world

EXTENSIVE LIVESTOCK FARMING In the Pampas and in Australia.

AREAS NOT SUITABLE FOR AGRICULTURE

TRADICIONAL INTENSIVE AGRICULTURE In desenly-populated regions in South and South East Asia. Small flooded rice plots in valleys, along coastal plains and on mountain slopes.

DRY CROPS AND NOMADIC GRAZING In the savannah, where there are extended dry periods. In desert regions, farming is nomadic.

MEDITERRANEAN AGRICULTURE Cultivation of olives, cereals and grapes. Also polyculture zones.

LARGE-SCALE CEREAL MONOCULTURE In Central Europe, the United States, Canada, Russia, Australia and Argentina.

NOMADIC FARMING AND HUNTER-GATHERING In the least developed tribes of Africa, the Amazon and on Pacific islands. The economy is similar to a Paleolithic economy.

PLANTATION AGRICULTURE In ex-colonies with a tropical climate. Monoculture crops of cotton, sugar, coffee, cocoa, tobacco, bananas or tea are grown for export. Usually owned by multinational companies.

INTENSIVE GREENHOUSE CROPS In Northern Europe Mediterranean regions.
